I began my career in the rail industry with Aurizon 10 years ago in the maintenance department doing a traineeship as a wagon maintainer. Contracted to Cliffs International we serviced all of their iron fleet of wagons and fuel tankers for shell. I also assisted the mechanical fitters with servicing of locomotives. I have a certificate III in transport and logistics TLI30407 in maintenance. I looked to further my skill set by moving into operations and becoming an operational maintainer.This position allowed myself to gain a greater knowledge of yard operations and logistics. As part of the upskilling in the depot operation maintainers were given the opportunity to take on a ATLD position as a driver. I was offered the role and eagerly took on this new role.An ATLD was required to work with a tutor driver and learn all the relative job requirements of a locomotive driver. Working closely with my tutor I gained the knowledge required to become a full time locomotive operator and was then able to work autonomously within the depot. As a locomotive operator I have further built on my skill set for rail operations.Working trains between Esperance and Kalgoorlie on the mainline I was required to drive Distributed Power consists and freighter services as required.Our consist length's were assisted with the implementation of Distributed Power and enabled the company to haul consists in excess of 1700metres in length running 4 locomotives at 14500tonne per train.Driver only yard operations are also a requirement of the role. Marshalling of train services, shunting of service wagons, locomotive trip servicing and minor repairs, shunt tractor operation and port operations are requirements of my role.Further more daily safety interactions and hazard reporting is required. I was part of the safety committee team for some time.In 2018 Aurizon shut down Operations in Esperance and I briefly worked for Pacific National as a Driver/Tutor Driver for 18mths here in Esperance. Aurizon again opened the Depot up in the first half of 2020 and I commenced working with the company again as a Tutor Driver.As I wanted to further my career in the industry Aurizon gave me the opportunity to up skill and undertake cert IV in training and assessing. Aurizon employed me as a Operations Trainer and I am still in this role and enjoying the new role training new and existing employees and helping them achieve their career aspirations.
