Since October 2020, I currently serve on the CATESOL Board of Directors as the President-Elect.From 2017 to 2020, I served as Outreach Coordinator, a new position I proposed to help promote awareness of CATESOL among its members and in the larger ESL community, and develop activities to generate the active involvement of members within CATESOL in order to retain members and encourage ESL professionals to join the organization.From 2014 to 2016, I represented CATESOL local chapters at the Board level in my position as Chapter Council Chair. I am a Project Specialist with the Outreach and Technical Assistance Network (OTAN), a California leadership project that focuses on assisting adult education staff with integrating technology into instruction and curriculum. I provide face-to-face and online training at sites and conferences across the state. I also assist with managing digital content and digital communications.

I oversaw an instructional program consisting of ESL, family literacy, and citizenship classes, as well as a distance learning program, at our main campus and satellite locations, and the work of instructors, instructional assistants and early childhood attendants, and administrative staff. I coordinated the hiring of new instructional staff members, the program and staffing schedules, our registration and placement office operations, the administration of standardized testing and other assessments, the purchasing of materials and technology, and staff participation in internal and external professional development opportunities. I represented our department and school at AEBG consortium workgroup activities and other outside events with partner agencies and community-based organizations.

For the 2002 version of the GED test (until December 2013), I provided administrative and student support for our GED testing program in a variety of areas - I oversaw the submission of testing materials and demographic data to our local testing center, handled records requests, wrote and updated GED program materials, securely maintained inventory of official GED materials, administered student registration sessions, and proctored testing sessions. Since January 2014, I completed tasks to open our PearsonVUE computer-based testing center in September 2014 and managed the administration of our GED testing program, including hiring new program staff to take over for me.

I met one-on-one with ESL students at all levels from Beginning to Advanced (and previously with students studying to get a High School Diploma or GED as well) who participated in our study-at-home program. I provided each student with individualized instruction by providing level-appropriate materials, reviewing work done at home, and formally assessing as needed. I revised assessments for a number of series used in our program, and added a new series and additional units to a second series. I provided support to other teachers who worked in the Distance Learning program at both our main campus and satellite locations. I began developing courses in Moodle to transition our program from a face-to-face to a hybrid distance learning program.

Online And Face-To-Face

From 2016 to 2018, I worked as a Coach for two adult education agency teams participating in OTAN's Digital Leadership Academy. I advised and assisted both teams as they developed technology plans and integrated technology into their instructional programs and activities. From 2014 to 2016, I developed and delivered two online webinars - one on teaching online, and the second on lessons learned from a technology project I led - for California adult education professionals. I also presented an adapted version of each webinar at in-person conferences throughout California.

I served as a member of the board of this CATESOL chapter for over five years. I served as the Chapter Coordinator for the final 18 months, and previously served as the Treasurer and as an Adult Level Representative. I helped organize two professional development events a year for ESL/EFL professionals. I was responsible for chairing Board meetings, handling the treasury, managing event registration, arranging for on-site exhibitors, creating program schedules and other forms, and handling logistical arrangements for the events.

I provided online training for SLIS instructors across the US and Canada on the use of basic and advanced tools in the D2L learning management system, and assisted instructors in organizing their courses. I provided technical support for instructors during the semester when they had questions about their courses or needed something fixed. I created training materials on homepage widgets, navigation bar tools, and rubrics. I also trained two new D2L student assistants and groups of SLIS students who served as peer mentors for incoming students on how to use specific features within D2L.

I taught library instruction sessions for freshmen in English 1B classes, including information on how to do research using SJSU databases and the library catalog, King Library resources, and RefWorks research management software. I developed digital learning objects, including LibGuides and a Facebook page for a library exhibit. I also did research in support of a grant application to fund a new fellowship program.

I was responsible for managing all aspects of a civics education program that is a part of the ESL program. This included creating student oral and written assessments, training teachers in the use of the assessments, gathering and maintaining paper and online wiki resources for teachers, training and supervising volunteers and staff in administering the assessments, and completing all paperwork and insuring its integrity for data submission. I also assisted with our citizenship preparation program and completed various tasks to help administer ESL department activities.

I responded to oral and written admissions inquiries, sat in on admissions interviews, decided on candidates for admissions, and maintained records for currently and previously enrolled students. I prepared school committee meeting and administrative records and completed paperwork to satisfy federal, state, and other external requirements. I wrote promotional materials, edited newsletters, and represented the school at public events. I managed the school bookkeeping system and created and administered the payroll system for school staff. I opened and closed the school and helped to maintain the school's physical plant.
