My project was an initiative to help reduce the amount of noisy, wasteful alerts that were being sent to the IT Technicians. These alerts were bombarding their inboxes from tools and/or services from the factory environment or surrounding infrastructure. These alerts were bombarding their inboxes from tools and/or services from the factory environment or surrounding infrastructure. I used a operational intelligence platform called Splunk to help index this raw email data and to collate and understand any issues, trends and avenues for improvement of any alerts.I used Splunk through the delivery of information dashboards which highlighted to fellow staff and management metrics of email data being sent to the IT Technicians. This took the form of daily metrics, weekly/monthly metrics and historical graphs showing progress as the project developed.The main section of my project took the information from the dashboards in Splunk to find out the most troublesome alerts and to find remediation for these. This normally took the form of turning off troublesome alerts, with clearance from all invested parties, and/or setting up smart alerts to aggregate them.Prior To:Old Alerts --> IT Technicians.My Task:Old Alerts --> [[SPLUNK] - Aggregation/Smart Alert] --> IT Technicians.The smart alerts usually took the form of some kind of aggregation rules (i.e. if there was >5 of a certain type in the space of 30m, then send 1 email instead of those 5). This form of aggregation was incredibly effective as a way of cutting down the amount of emails, whilst still ensuring they received the important ones.Throughout the year I was successful in cutting down by 60%+ in noisy/unwanted alerts to the IT Technicians. Ultimately making their lives easier by cutting out the noise and leaving them able to tackle the real issues. Show less

My placement project with Seagate Technology was to evaluate their current testing procedures of different IT sectors. I spent each week of the 4 week project with the different areas of the IT sector to enquire, record and suggest new, if possible more efficient methods of testing in development projects. The results of which were published in a report which was completed and delivered to the then Senior IT Director of Seagate Technology, Londonderry. I spent each week of the 4 week project with the different areas of the IT sector to enquire, record and suggest new, if possible more efficient methods of testing in development projects. The results of which were published in a report which was completed and delivered to the then Senior IT Director of Seagate Technology, Londonderry. The project report was taken on board and the suggestions were used to help build the foundations for an IT Portal for their staff to utilise. This project was my first main exposure to working as a team and within a busy, active IT environment. This experience enabled me to gather crucial experience in working with teams, forming relationships and camaraderies with staff and meeting important deadlines. Show less
