Anthony Proctor – 68 – Chairman, Pendarves Estate Pty Ltd & Managing Director AAP Consultancy Ltd.Leaving the Royal Air Force after 10 years - great experience, learnt a lot but... square peg, round hole!! Tony then joined the marketing department of Ideal Standard. Sales roles with Kraft Foods and Cadbury Schweppes followed. At Cadbury Schweppes he was involved in the marketing of Perrier and Evian Waters, before moving to the CS Wine & Spirit division – Courtenay Wines. Selling to the National Brewers he was later recruited to head up the National Sales Team for Fine Wine Shipper Laurence Hayward Ltd. Tony founded his own business - Barratt, Proctor & Co in 1982 later being elected Chairman of the East Midland Wine & Spirit Association. Acquiring Australian Wineries (UK) Ltd in 1990, he went on to build the BARRAMUNDI Wine Brand from scratch to in excess of 2 Million Cases per annum and establish its position within the UK’s Top 5 Retail Wine brands.In 2001 Tony sold his interests in Australian Wineries (UK) Ltd and became joint owner and Chairman of Pendarves REW Pty Ltd, Belford, NSW with founder Dr Philip Norrie – know internationally as ‘The Wine Doctor’. Apart from Tony’s activity in exporting Pendarves Estate wines to the USA, UK, Europe and the Far East, Tony was closely associated with Food & Drink Specialist, Everbrand Ltd, in bringing Loyd Grossman Wines to market via the UK Multiple Grocers. He is currently involved with Joint Venture & Marketing projects with Pendarves REW Pty Ltd, , which will centre on distributing the Resveratrol Enhanced Wines of Pendarves Estate on a variety of International Markets. Tony is also a Consultant for Hugo & Henry Ltd – producers of the revolutionary ‘Drip Couture’ media communication concept. Tony is widely known and well respected within the International Drinks Industry, and has extensive long established relationships at senior level across this important sector.

These are nature’s most potent antioxidants because they can reduce oxidation by up to 100% i.e. stop it altogether as shown by Dr. Frankel at Davis University in California. They occur mainly in the grape skin to protect it from external diseases such as fungus during a very moist vintage. The human body uses many complex biochemical pathways and reactions to function; but these reactions result in waste products such as free radicals (molecular compounds that contain an extra unpaired electron). These free radicals are the body’s terrorists and cause biological havoc which helps contribute to our degenerative ongoing diseases such as cancer, dementia, diabetes, vascular disease (heart attack and stroke), macular degeneration (commonest cause of blindness in people over 65) and arthritis. The fermentation process, in making wine, produces alcohol and liberates these antioxidants from the grape skin, which also block the effect of these free radicals. Thus there are many times more antioxidants in wine compared to grape juice; plus the alcohol, which also has health benefits if consumed in moderation, resulting in a reduction in the death rate for humans by up to 50% for those who consume wine in moderation daily. It is not surprising then to learn that Resveratrol is the first compound known “that has extended the lifespan of every organism given it” according to Professor David Sinclair, a Resveratrol researcher at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. The best way to treat a disease is to not get it in the first place hence the move away from treating disease to preventing disease. The Holy Grail of the wine industry and oenotherapy now is to produce a Resveratrol enhanced or enriched, healthier wine as the best preventative medicine to slow down the ageing process and therefore extend human life expectancy.
