As disappointing as it was to see guitarist Christopher Amott leave Arch Enemy, it was a very good thing when he relaunched Armageddon, the melodic death metal turned melodic metal (and back to melodic death metal) band he started at the turn of the century. After delivering a more than worthy comeback album in 2015’s Captivity and Devourment, Amott and company set their sights on the 1997 Armageddon debut Crossing the Rubicon. The album has been out of print for nearly two decades, and was only available in Japan when it first came out, but instead of simply reissuing it, Crossing the Rubicon – Revisited is a brand new rerecording of the album.I’m generally in the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” camp when it comes to rerecordings, and Crossing the Rubicon definitely was not broken. I assume label complications prevented a straight reissue, which would have been very well received. That said, Crossing the Rubicon – Revisited is one hell of a melodic death metal album. The original album came at the height of the Gothenburg melodic death metal scene, so the songs have that now-classic approach. Think early Arch Enemy and At the Gates, with thrashy riffs, power metal-worthy solos and razor-sharp harsh vocals.Crossing the Rubicon – Revisited does seem to breathe new life into this album. Part of that is the current production values, but the vocals seem to fit better on this version. Antony Hamalainen is a massive presence here, and he helps connect the new Armageddon album to their early sound. The atmospherics and keyboards seem way more prominent on this version, adding depth to the songs and again tying it to Captivity and Devourment. - Justine G. / Wimps & Posers

Nightrage’s debut, 2003’s Sweet Vengeance, smoked. It was an absolute ball tearer of an album from start to finish and one that I still spin some six years on. I certainly can’t say the same for the disappointing Descent into Chaos (2005) and the dismal A New Disease Is Born (2007). Perhaps the band’s instability is due to the revolving door of line-up changes. More interesting, the recent ones include the departure of two members post A New Disease Is Born to pursue a career in pop music. Maybe that’s why that album fails on many levels? Who knows? Regardless, new blood means new attitude and the band, who are now vocalist Antony Hämäläinen (Meridian Dawn), guitarists Marios Iliopoulos (band founder and sole original member) and Olof Mörck (Amaranthe), bassist Anders Hammer (Dragonland) and drummer Johan Nunez (Kamelot) have truly returned to form with their excellent fourth long player, Wearing a Martyr’s Crown.Whilst the brief build up of the opening cut, Shed the Blood, is only a dozen seconds or so, the suspense of waiting to see what Nightrage 2009 is all about is intense. And boy, it sure as hell doesn’t disappoint! THIS is the Nightrage that blew many people away six years ago and it’s a clear indication of the band’s return to their melodic death metal roots. The brilliant follow up cut, Collision of Fate could easily have featured on their debut album - thrashing riffs, brutal vocals all wrapped up with fantastic musicianship and song writing. What more could any melo-death fan want?It’s time to put the failure of their last album well and truly to rest. Hell, even the disappointment of their second outing can be forgotten, and probably forgiven at this point as well. Sweet Vengeance? Oh yes. Wearing a Martyr’s Crown is right up there with their debut effort.
