- Extensive research into Ulcerative Colitis and Colon Cancer, regarding aetiology, pathology, genetics and bioinformatics/ computational approaches to understand and gain insight from gene expression - Application of unsupervised machine learning models, that clustered genes and their relative expression into key groups I.e. low risk and high risk groups for a patient’s ulcerative colitis developing into ulcerative cancer, staying quiescent or chance of going into remission- Performed a cross analysis that allowed the most high risk combination of genes (and their expression) to be traced back to a biological root. In this case, it was a specific proteasome “subunit”. This allows the pathology of the disease to be better understood and for a specific therapeutic target for this subunit to be engineered (as part of the development of precision medicine for disease) - This research was conducted in the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology at Queen’s University
