My interest in international issues started from a young age, and I had my first real experience at the age of 17 when I volunteered on a kibbutz in Israel for a month before starting my first degree in Development Studies. I then went on to teach English as a foreign language so that I could continue meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures. I have particular experience in ‘enhancing the international student experience’ and ‘enhancing the international experience of home students’, through various schemes and projects and embedding global perspectives across the curriculum. Working in conjunction with RETAS, I helped co-ordinate voluntary classes for refugees and asylum seekers at Leeds Beckett University and enjoyed many years as a mentor for a refugee in Leeds. I’ve contributed towards various materials writing projects such as language learning materials for children in China and Singapore. I've also been involved in EU Lifelong learning projects developing multi-media language learning tools including DVD's and Apps.In 2015, as an active citizen and with the support of Kirklees Council, I helped build a community network, called 'Made in Clayton West' in my local village, based on an Asset Based Community Development model. We empower people in our community to achieve their goals and get involved. Regular groups, clubs and community events now take place and a very active social media page is used as well as an annual newsletter published and circulated. We've held, two ‘Open Village’ events and have been held to celebrate what the village has to offer. They were hosted by Clayton West residents, local groups and venues (indoors and outdoors). The second event saw over 35 arts, music, sports, nature, technology, food and social activities taking place over a weekend and over 900 people from Clayton West and Scissett enjoying themselves. I have been an active member of the PTA at our local primary school and have been Secretary and Fundraiser for Save the Children - The Yorkshire Task Force Group for around 20 years. In the last 5 years, our YTF fundraising has resulted in the grand total of £48,532. In June 2018 I was successful in becoming an on-screen marking examiner for IELTS. Recently, in February 2021 I became a Covid Community Support Officer for my local council, Kirklees. I am helping communities, businesses and organisations to better understand the Covid guidance and compliance to keep our communities safe this year.
