Teach and advise students. I believe that NWACC provides a vital role in the community, not just as a workforce developer, but as an academic institution that provides the pivotal first two years of college-level education. I have watched once struggling students excel and had the privilege of teaching many exceptionally bright and motivated students through the Honors Program. I pride myself as a passionate teacher. I teach US History, World Civilizations, a Leadership seminar, and History of the American West. I embrace a holistic learning environment, promote global awareness and the enriching aspects of diversity, and emphasize critical thinking and the importance of service. As Honors Program Director (2009-2015), I led the creation of learning objectives and program requirements, supervised honors curriculum and faculty, and was responsible for program marketing, recruitment, and advising. Additionally, I initiated a college-wide global themed semester that focused on a particular country or region of the world and coordinated the annual Academic Awards Ceremony. My research specialties are US foreign policy, Latin American history, particularly US relations with Cuba and Argentina, the role of race in US policy formation, and Pacific Studies, specifically US-Marshallese relations. Other interests include: U.S. Nuclear Testing history, the Marshallese in Arkansas, New Mexican history, Native American and Transatlantic History.PhD dissertation: "Between Nationalism and Hegemony: Cuba and the United States" (2006) MA thesis, "The Elusive Ideology: Peronism and U.S. Relations with Argentina, 1945-1952" Research overseen by Dr. Randall B. Woods, Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Arkansas.

As a freelance photojournalist I covered breaking news, financial news, extreme weather events, and sports that include UA athletics. The AP provides global services, so my images have appeared in the New York Times, Sports Illustrated, Forbes, etc. I have also worked individually for Country Weekly, the Dallas Morning News, USA Today, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, GMA, and the Chicago Tribune. Some photos may be found online at Corbis Images and AP Images.Some of my most memorable assignments include: the Oklahoma bridge collapse, the UA school shooting, tornado aftermaths including an impromptu interview with a survivor who said he felt "like Superman" as he flew through the air, LPGA tournaments, the controversial firing of Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson and other UA football coaches, celebrity entertainers (including Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Celine Dion, Garth Brooks, Will Smith, and Jennifer Lopez, among many others) who performed during WalMart's annual shareholders' mtgs, and NCAA track and SEC football. I was inspired by a story I read about a UT-Austin track athlete who lost the grueling 800 meter run at the NCAA Championships by .01 second. I remembered the race because the winner from Oregon went on to compete in the Olympics. In the article the Texas runner said he had placed the photo I shot of him as he stumbled just before crossing the finish line in his locker as inspiration to improve.Other interests: blending my historical knowledge with my photography skills. My portfolio includes images from the following locations: Canyon de Chelly, AZ; Aztec, Santa Fe, Pecos, Taos Pueblo, Coronado State Park, and Georgia O'Keeffe Country (Abiquiu), NM; Mesa Verde, Lowry Peublo, and RMNP, CO; Athens, Delphi, Olympia, Epidavros, Patmos, Greece; Rome, Naples, Florence, and Venice, Italy; Costa del Sol, Spain, Managua, Nicaragua; Havana, Cuba; San Jose, Cartago, and Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica.

Worked as a features writer and photographer. Later switched to full-time photographer under the supervision of managing editor Ritta Martin Basu. Left the Times to take a part-time job with the AP and to devote more time to dissertation research and writing.
