New York, New York, United States
Lead Scientist working with Fabien Cousteau to design, develop, and deploy the world's most advanced underwater laboratory, PROTEUS™. Leveraging 89 days of saturation diving experience over 10 missions (1984-2012).
  • Northeastern University
Professor Of Marine & Environmental Sciences/Civil & Environmental Engineering
Northeastern University Aug 2013 - Present
    Greater Boston Area
I lead the Field Robotics Laboratory which fields a fleet of Fetch-class Autonomous Underwater Vehicles. I also direct the Ecophysiology Laboratory that investigates how global climate change and emerging issues like microplastics pollution affect marine life. Our work has been funded by the NSF, private donors, and the Schmidt Family Foundation/Schmidt Marine Technology Partners. I teach Oceanography, Technology and the Blue Economy, and Ocean & Coastal Processes for the College of Science, and Environmental Fluid Mechanics for the College of Engineering.

    Northeastern University Jul 2018 - Sep 2020
    Greater Boston Area
Supported new university-wide research initiatives in AI/ML, biophysics of cells, network science, coastal sustainability, and molecular biology. Aided the advancement team in attracting large investments including the launch of the Roux Institute ($100M donation). Developed new initiatives for global partnerships with industry (biotech) and other academic institutions (University of Hong Kong, University of Malaysia, and EU institutions of excellence). Traveled internationally to represent the university at recruitment and welcome events in India, Hong Kong, and mainland China. Represented the College of Science on numerous university-wide committees for governance.
  • Northeastern University
Faculty Head, Three Seas Program In Marine Biology
    Northeastern University Apr 2014 - Jun 2018
    Boston, Massachusetts, United States
The Three Seas program (https://cos.northeastern.edu/marine-environmental-sciences/three-seas/) is a unique program, over three decades in existence, that trains undergraduates or graduates in marine science, with a year of intense coursework at the beginning graduate level at three different locations: The Marine Science Center of Northeastern University, two field stations of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama, and the Friday Harbor Laboratories in Puget Sound, WA. M.S. students spend an additional six months conducting research usually leading to a publication in the peer-reviewed literature.
  • Global Resilience Institute
    Chief Technology Officer
Global Resilience Institute Feb 2017 - Present
    Boston, Massachusetts, United States
The Global Resilience Institute (https://globalresilience.northeastern.edu) applies technological and social solutions to hard problems involving resilience of infrastructure and people and communities. My current research and development thrusts include communications resilience in urban areas, port and harbor security in the face of attack by autonomous systems, and developing decision support tools for the management of tide gates in urban coastal wetlands.

  • Sias Patterson Inc
Co-Founder, Chief Technology Officer, Vice President
Sias Patterson Inc Mar 1995 - Nov 2005
    Yorktown, Virginia
Sias Patterson was the first company globally to commercialize a small Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, the Fetch-class AUVs. Sias Patterson was co-founded with Jim Sias, former Professor of Industrial Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Fetch-class AUVs were sold to industry, government, and academia, before being acquired by Prizm in 2005. The IP for Fetch was re-acquired by the College of William and Mary in 2010 and is now owned by Northeastern University. Fetch-class robots are used at the Marine Science Center of Northeastern. They have visited four continents and extreme environments for research on using neural networks to identify fishes and krill (Chesapeake Bay and Antarctica), surveying water quality over coral reefs (Florida and Bonaire), and exploring shallow-water hydrothermal vents (Iceland). Fetch also discovered a new Revolutionary War era shipwreck; the original Fetch built in 1994-1995 is still swimming, the world's longest continuously swimming AUV.Sias Patterson also conducted classified research and development for the US government as a subcontractor in the area of submarine operations.
