Urban Stages is an award-winning, not-for-profit, Off-Broadway Theatre Company that champions new works by artists of diverse cultural backgrounds and make them accessible to all. Urban Stages accomplishes this by developing and producing world, American, and NYC premieres, offering educational programs, and conducting outreach initiatives. As a language teacher and cultural ambassador at Urban Stages, I actively promote cultural diversity and inclusivity. Through my role, I integrate cultural elements into language teaching, creating a holistic learning experience that goes beyond language acquisition. I design and deliver language classes and workshops that not only focus on Spanish and Quechua language proficiency but also incorporate cultural aspects such as history, traditions, and arts. By doing so, I strive to create a deeper understanding and appreciation of the cultural contexts associated with these languages. Furthermore, I collaborate with artists, community organizations, and local cultural institutions to develop partnerships and initiatives that align with Urban Stages' mission. I actively participate in the planning and execution of cultural events, performances, and workshops that celebrate the diverse cultural backgrounds of our community. Araceli is a singer, songwriter, researcher of traditional Peruvian music, and promoter of the Quechua language. Her work is defined by her interest in highlighting the fundamental contribution of women in music, promoting the Quechua language (the native language of her grandparents), preserving popular genres of Peruvian music, and - as someone of Afro-Andean heritage - advocating for cultural unity and integration. Araceli has been nominated twice for the Latin Grammy Awards (2020/2022). Her first nomination came with the album and documentary "The Warrior Women of Afro-Peruvian Music" produced by JUST PLAY, led by Matt Geraghty, a New York-based music producer and bassist. This production challenges racism through the power of music. This marked the beginning of a creative partnership between Poma and Geraghty, as they started creating music together and producing their next musical documentary, "Guerreras Puertorriqueñas," which also focuses on women artists. In 2021, Araceli established herself in New York City with the goal of continuing to promote the music of her roots and showcase Peruvian culture to the world. It was during this time that Afro-Andean Funk was born, a Peruvian-American duo led by Araceli Poma and Matt Geraghty. Breaking cultural barriers through music, Afro-Andean Funk recorded their first album titled "The Sacred Leaf," known for celebrating Peruvian indigenous culture, women's rights, and spreading the ancestral Quechua language. The music on this album encompasses a wide range of traditional and contemporary styles inspired by the struggles, stories, and beliefs of women in the Andes and their communities. Afro-Andean Funk has been nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Through her work both within and outside her country, Araceli Poma is bringing visibility to the music of her roots and creating the new music of Peru through her new songs.

Just Play is a production company that creates itinerant music documentaries focusing on emerging artists and hidden cultural treasures in the Americas. The company aims to promote equality in music and highlight the contributions of women in the industry. As Cultural Manager at Just Play, I play a crucial role in the production and direction of music documentaries. I collaborate closely with the team, artists, and local communities to identify compelling stories, organize filming locations, and ensure that the documentaries capture the essence of the cultural treasures we encounter. Through our projects, I work to promote diversity and equality by giving a voice to underrepresented artists and challenging societal prejudices.Specifically, these projects demonstrate my ability to curate and showcase compelling cultural narratives, amplify marginalized voices, and contribute to the company's mission of promoting equality and cultural appreciation through our documentaries. Key AchievementsCo-produced and directed, "The Warrior Women of Afro-Peruvian Music," which was nominated for the Latin Grammy Awards. This documentary brought together a talented group of Peruvian women artists who courageously address issues of racism, sexism, and marginalization in Peruvian society. Produced and directed "Guerreras Puertorriqueñas," a documentary that showcases the resilience of women percussionists, singers, and dancers in Puerto Rico. This film celebrates their talent and showcases their artistry amidst the challenges of natural disasters, political turmoil, and a pandemic. Filmed "El Encuentro," a music documentary shot in Lima, Peru, where traditional Peruvian music masters reunite on stage after two years of the pandemic. This production captures their stories, music, and emotions, providing a powerful testament to the cultural heritage and resilience of these artists.

Over the past six weeks, CMA partnered with Casita Maria Center For Arts & Education and Sounds that Carry (Renate Rohlfing and Olivia Cosío) to pilot a teaching artist program. In this program, students worked with two teaching artists, Liz Hogg and Araceli Poma, and developed their own compositions as the culmination of this six-week curriculum. We are so happy with the success of this program and it was magical to witness the growth that occurred over these six weeks.

As a television host of the cultural program "Miski Takiy," I showcased and promoted the musical work of artists from the Peruvian tradition. Through engaging interviews, performances, and storytelling, I brought attention to the rich cultural heritage of Peru and its traditional music. By providing a platform for these artists on national television, I contributed to preserving and promoting Peruvian cultural expressions.
