Research And Program Evaluation Associate
I have combined my research experiences and my teaching experiences as a research and program evaluation associate at High Jump, a Chicago nonprofit that provides BIPOC, low-income middle school students with out of school academic programming. My internal data collection, analysis, and visualization work require me to communicate across teams every week and continuously work with others on meeting fundraising deadlines, program implementation efforts, and overall quality improvement goals for the organization. The biggest of my projects is a racial justice research study; the research investigates the experiences of BIPOC, low-income students at Chicago’s selective enrollment high schools through empathy interviews. I’ve overseen this project from its beginnings—from the research design to IRB approval and amendments to the data collection efforts and analysis.
Research Intern
I worked remotely with the University of Chicago Urban Labs' Inclusive Economy Lab as a summer research intern. The two main projects I assisted with were: research on a universal basic income pilot study in Chicago and data collection for US apprenticeship attainability research.
Teaching Assistant
I worked as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant during the 2020-21 school year and the 2021-22 school year. As an ETA, I worked with 8 teachers to co-teach English and history classes of 10-35 secondary-school age students; often, I was allowed to take complete control of lessons. During the semester, I regularly prepared presentations and class activities for students to practice their English speaking, writing, and reading skills. For ~100 of my freshman-age students, I developed a Model United Nations curriculum and selected and trained 10 finalists to participate in the regional Model United Nations conference in Madrid. As a side project, I interviewed and filmed students for a documentary-style video. I asked them about themselves, their family, their hobbies, their interests, and let them talk about anything they thought was interesting. I was also involved (along with another Fulbright Spain grantee) in the creation of an all-girls skateboarding group where we encouraged women to feel comfortable going out to the often male-dominated skateparks and organized skate sessions around Madrid.
Research Intern
I worked with the Crime Lab on the READI program analysis. READI Chicago, a Heartland Alliance program, aims to reduce gun violence in Chicago by providing cognitive behavioral therapy and transitional jobs to men at risk of being involved in gun violence.Throughout my tenure, my teammates exposed me to the dynamics of data-driven research and program evaluation. This experience honed my analytical skills, introduced me to qualitative data analysis through NVivo, and provided a great foundational experience of working with a large-scale policy research institute.
Mansfield Fellow
I worked alongside two other students and the Mansfield Institute director to coordinate social justice-related events such as lectures, discussions, workshops, and discussions. For many of these events, presenters were invited to discuss their work or writing. Notable invitees include James Forman Jr., Imbolo Imbue, and Lauren Michele Jackson.Throughout the 2019-2020 school year, I helped organize the founding of the Mansfield Scholar Activism Organization, a community of Roosevelt students led by the Mansfield Institute which tackle different issues each year. For 2020, the issue tackled was environmental injustice in Chicago's South and Southwest sides. As part of the Institute, I worked with other Roosevelt Departments and outside community organizations to provide educational lectures and discussions, internships, and volunteer opportunities to students. The organization aims to engage students in meaningful social justice advocacy and activism. As a response to the COVID-19 outbreak, I co-started (along with the other Mansfield Fellows) the video miniseries "RU Quarantined: Staying Connected during the COVID-19 Pandemic" and interviewed Roosevelt University students and faculty to document individual responses to the coronavirus.
Research Intern
I assisted with the Chicago housing discrimination testing project developed by the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, John Marshall Law School, and Roosevelt University. The research project tested for housing discrimination of people with Housing Choice Vouchers compared to those without.
Summer Administrative Assistant
I assisted the Roosevelt University Office of Residence Life with day-to-day operations of the office ad well as planning for large events like conferences and student move-in days.
Research Fellow
As a research fellow, my proposed research project was funded by the University Office of Student Research. With the help of another student and a sociology professor, I studied the history and effects of the Illinois Violent Offender Against Youth Registry Act (VOYRA).I presented the research and findings at the Roosevelt University Research Symposium and at the Chicago Area Undergraduate Research Symposium.
