Modeled price movements in futures markets by applying time-series predictive algorithms to moderately large (~8 GB) data sets. Using coarse-grained analysis, predicted the ’07-’08 collapse and recovery of US equities, shifting asset balance accordingly.

• Theorist, biophysical chemistry. We were the first to successfully predict the relative 3D sizes of the complicated structures formed by the folding of large (1000s of bases) RNAs solely from their primary sequences (Yoffe et al., Proc Natl Acad Sci USA, 105:16153–58, 2008). This was accomplished using a combination of analytical and computational (C++/Unix/Sun Grid Engine/Mathematica) approaches to simplify the RNA structures down to their essential elements. We subsequently confirmed these predictions experimentally. • UCLA Chancellor's Dissertation Year Fellowship. Teaching assistant, graduate statistical mechanics.

Analyzed, for the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), how foreign countries control chemical residues in meats. Determined which of their best programs and strategies could be adopted to increase US food safety. Identified 14 specific potential improvements.

• Initiated the redesign of a major federal food safety program, the USDA-FSIS National Residue Monitoring Plan (NRP), to make it more transparent, scientific, and effective. The NRP protects the public by monitoring chemical residues in meat and poultry:—Co-developed a novel risk-based mathematical model for residue monitoring. Convinced FSIS and its partner federal agencies to support a redesign of the NRP based upon it. —Convened and co-led a 40-person multi-agency task force (FSIS, FDA, EPA, CDC, ARS, APHIS, others) to complete and implement the revised program. Improved its coverage from seven residue classes to 12. —Coauthored four books, and gave numerous presentations, on the NRP.• Managed federal responses to complex and significant food safety issues. Led joint FSIS/FDA committee that established scientifically-based actionable levels for dioxin. Guided FSIS response to proposed Codex limits for lead. Led joint FSIS/FDA team that resolved a previously intractable interagency regulatory conflict. Oversaw development of new analytical chemistry methods. Represented FSIS nationally on sensitive public health issues. • Ten performance awards, including the USDA Department Honor Award.
