Learned the different functions of several key departments in the Bank of South Sudan (BoSS); specifically:the Banking Supervision and Research and Statistics directorate of the BoSS: Over a week at the Banking Supervision department:Cycled through the Regulatory and Licensing, Credit Rating Bureau, On-site, Off-site and Forex Bureaus sections.Learned the current regulatory regimes, including reading the Bank of South Sudan Act 2011, the Banking Act of South Sudan 2012, and several other regulatory documents that deal with commercial bank and foreign exchange bureau regulation.Understood the onsite and offsite practice of the BoSS with regards to commercial bank supervision.Observed the foreign exchange (FX) auction as a monetary policy tool in action during six different FX sittings over six weeks.Over a two month period at the Research and Statistics department:Cycled through the the five sections of the department - Fiscal, External, Real, Monetary Statistics and the Policy Research and Analysis section. Spent 7 weeks at the Policy Research and Analysis section, where I took time to understand South Sudan's current macroeconomic environment by assiduously reading relevant publications by the BoSS, the World Bank, the MoFP and MoP among other publications such as the R-NDS, and the R-ARCSS. the Finance department and the Banking Operations department both under the Banking Administration and Finance directorate:Over a week at the Finance department:Cycled through the Payments and Accounts sections.Learned the BoSS’s internal loans structures and terms. Observed the BoSS’s budgeting process.Understood the BoSS’s financial reporting procedures under IFRS.Over a week at the Banking Operations Department:Cycled through the Clearance, Domestic Payments and Customer Service sections.
