Opal was a tool used to modernize legacy applications while seamlessly integrating systems across multiple platforms and architectures. In a nutshell, it let you build a web-deployed graphical front-end that accessed data from legacy character based systems (i.e., VT100 terminal connected to a Unix box or 3270 connected to an IBM AS/400 box) and modern relational databases through ODBC.Infresco Corporation was an independent business unit of Computer Associates at the time I worked for them. I started as a contractor at the Rochester, NY site of Northern Telecom's Directory and Operator Services division and later became a regular employee.Rochester's main focus was on directory assistance. I worked in the "terminals" group where we wrote the software that directory assistance telephone operators used to perform the caller's search. Our software ran on top of a platform known as the TOPS MPX IWS (Traffic Operator Position System - Multipurpose Position - Intelligent Workstation). This was an IBM PS/2 using Windows 3.1 with the Wollongong TCP/IP stack running the IWSS (Intelligent Workstation Subsystem). This platform used the OPP (Open Position Protocol) to communicate between the IWS and the TOPS DMS (Digital Multiplex System).
