Emergentdesign.org offers web strategy and communications services for nonprofits. Its current focus is on a constructivist approach to science education, working within the Understanding by Design framework to build shared communities of practice and open-sourced curricula.

Taught four sciences (forensics, integrated science, chemistry, and biology.

Originally designed and built Web site and shepherded it through a number of iterations. Worked at the nexus of editorial, business, and technology groups. Managed staff ranging from 3 to 12 through boom, bust, and boom cycles. Developed new products that accounted for up to 50% of site traffic including several iterations of online video. Took Web site from a dedicated AOL presence to 70 million page views/month.

Developed BusinessWeek site for AOL before the Internet.

Pioneered professional-level desktop publishing and data-driven, visual storytelling. Launched BW on AOL, then gradually transitioned over to BusinessWeek Online.

As special projects editor at The Washington Times created prototypes for market testing new national newsmagazine, wrote composition code to create automated layouts, after mag was launched joined the art department as a designer, then moved to graphics doing illustrated charts.

Started as dictationist, set up training program for dictationists, reported on District news and feature stories, and became assistant to the Metro Editor organizing assignments and coverage, spearheaded local elections coverage. Took three-month leave of absence and returned as special projects editor.
