Thompson Island Outward Bound Educational Center is a not-for-profit organization whose primary purpose is to provide challenging experiential learning programs that inspire character development, compassion, community service, environmental responsibility and academic achievement. Our organization principally serves early adolescents from all economic and social communities of greater Boston, and the institutions and adults who support them. We operate from a spectacular 204 acre campus on Thompson Island in Boston Harbor and host over 20,000 visitors each year. Our youth programs are supported by local philanthropic support, fees for service, and collaborations with schools, school districts, universities and national foundations. Arthur acted as Interim Executive Director while the board conducted a search for a permanent Executive Director. He continued in his role as CEO of Thompson Island Outward Bound whose board agreed to share his time with Outward Bound USA.

The Outward Bound Professional Learning Lab is a collaboration of Outward Bound USA and all eleven Outward Bound schools in the U.S network. With a small core staff and a nationally respected research partner, the Lab tapped the craft wisdom of master instructors across the network to identify research-based best practices in character development (SEL) through outdoor challenge. Instruments were developed to measure both student outcomes and adult practice so that the relationship between the two can be analyzed across the network and then discussed, debated and reexamined by instructors and instructor leaders. To disseminate best practices, The Lab created consistent, scalable professional learning curricula that can be used across the network and beyond. Using our data on both student outcomes and instructional practice, the Lab created a community of practice across the Outward Bound network where rigorous dialogue among peers continues to drive continuous improvement in how we do our work. Mr. Pearson served as Director of the Lab will retaining his duties as CEO at Thompson Island Outward Bound, ensuring that the research aspects of the Lab’s work were firmly rooted in the needs of practitioners. The PEAR Institute, led by Gil Noam, Ed.D., Dr. Habil, serves as the research partner of the Lab. The Lawrence Hall of Science’s BEETLES field science program, led by Craig Strang, advised on developing curricula that could be replicated and scaled nationally. The creation of the Lab was funded by a three year grant from the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation. By supporting a coalition of national youth development organizations, The Foundation’ goal was “to identify “what works” with respect to adult practices that build youth character, and help these organizations translate this knowledge into practice through training and professional development for adult staff and volunteers.”
