This involved research into market projections and state policy goals, working with energy modelers and policy analysts to design cost effective programs with $100+M budgets.This work decreased energy and maintenance costs for public facilities, achieving policy-mandated energy use reduction goals for utilities, and substantially reduced GHG emissions. I worked with 40+ Senegalese farmers near the village I lived in to introduce agroforestry techniques to them. I held training for farmers to attend where they learn about tree nursery establishment, basic tree care and propagation techniques. With my extension work, my workpartners planted more than 8,000 trees.I've also worked with the school in my village to build a school garden. I wrote a Peace Corps grant and constructed a hand-dug well and chain-linked fence. For the current SERDP project laboratory experiments, particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiments are being conducted in the Large Oscillatory Water and Sediment Tunnel (LOWST) to better understand the complex flow dynamics around the surrogate munitions. These PIV experiments require capturing the flow field around the munition at two distinct times: (1) the onset of motion and (2) during full motion, just after the initialization of motion. Typically, these experiments require two separate setups requiring a large expenditure of time and energy to reset the munitions and measurement equipment. As part of this REU, I explored the use of electro-magnets as a viable method allowing researchers control of the munition mobility during PIV experiments, greatly reducing experimental down-time. In addition, other potential applications in the lab for the electro-magnet system were explored (e.g., securing small-scale hydraulic models for experiments and teaching demonstrations). Show less
