My name is Arul Prakkash, and I am a Senior Program Manager for Asia and the Pacific at WITNESS, a leading human rights organization that leverages the power of video to create change.With over two decades of experience in grassroots multimedia communications, I have dedicated my career to advancing human rights and social justice causes. At WITNESS, I lead programmatic efforts in the Asia and Pacific region, working to promote the use of video to expose and document human rights violations in situations of conflict and crisis.As a human rights activist, community organizer, and media specialist, I have developed a unique set of skills and expertise that allow me to support frontline activists, grassroots movements, and social influencers in the use of video and technology for human rights. I am particularly passionate about the evidentiary uses of video, and I work tirelessly to train and support others in the use of video archiving, digital security, and physical safety measures.Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with a diverse range of stakeholders, including journalists, independent media, citizens, and NGOs. I am especially proud of my work in using internet and social media technology to promote human rights education and advocacy in Southeast Asia.Prior to joining WITNESS, I spent a decade serving as the executive director and senior program staff member at Pusat Komas, a popular communications and human rights NGO in Malaysia. During this time, I also served as a steering committee member of BERSIH 2.0, a civil society movement advocating for free and fair elections in Malaysia. I later helped set up and co-coordinate a nationwide web-based election observation body, and trained hundreds of independent observers during the 2013 Malaysian general elections.In addition to my work with WITNESS, I am also a filmmaker and director.
