Project : Analysis of the technical requirement design of Substation Automation system as per IEC 61850 standardMotivationThe existing fault reporting system at MAN had many disadvantages such as - limited functionality- does not support the latest communication technology- more cabling and maintenance costs. In this context, MAN planned a network control system project according to IEC 61850 standard in order to solve these drawbacks. The motivation is that MAN was in the early stages of this project. So a report describes the architecture, technical requirements and implementation procedures, could be used as a guide to realise this project.Contributions to the projectThe limitations of the existing system at MAN Diesel & Turbo SE, Augsburg were identified. The contributions were as follows:- Definition of the technical requirements, principles and philosophies of the project according to IEC 61850 Standards- Preparation of the implementation guidelines- Definition of the bus topology- Definition of the network control system architecture- Analysis of the primary and secondary technology- Planning of the communication system between 3 levels such as process level, bay level and station level.- Definition of the hardware, software, performance and test requirements of the network control system level.- Analysis of the procedures and experiences of similar IEC 61850 Projects executed at various companies.Objectives of the project- Presentation of information (single-line diagram, events, alarms, measured values etc.) at the control room.- Recording of changes in measured values, boundary value analysis, faults, annunciations etc.- Monitoring the network on process level (e.g. switchgear, transformers, lines) and bay level (e.g. self-monitoring of the Bay controller) from the control room. - In addition to the central data storage at the control room (station level), a bay level data storage could be also possible
