Ui Team Lead, Senior Software Engineer And General Wearer Of Hats
I was deeply involved in the project management, decision making and technical development of the Cxense Advertising product, which has made my time working there the most valuable of my career. I wore many hats. While I was primarily leading development in the UI layer, I was also at times a business analyst, a user-experience designer, a project manager or handling communications for recruiting and product documentation. The unifying thread that linked the hats I wore was simplicity and elegance. Omit needless words, diagrams, geegaws, classes, but always make what remains be elegant and count. Easy to say, hard to do, exceptionally fun to make happen. As an engineer, I retain a particular delight in killing off object hierarchies and using collaboration as much as possible. Employing design patterns effectively is a particular goal of mine because it makes solutions both simpler and more elegant. As products inevitably change over time, the underlying design patterns often remain strong and durable while some minor adjustments are made to the code around them.My primary focus was the UI layer, both technically and with regard to user experience. Cxense Advertising’s UI layer was originally written in Java using Apache Wicket. Over time, the advantages of richer clients, dropping server-side session management and a stricter separation between the UI and API layers became increasingly apparent. As such, I led the switch to AngularJS in the UI layer backed by a strictly RESTful API for the three of us that were focussed on the front end.Non-technically, I would design the interactions for new features, disseminate these plans to existing customers, manage the delivery of features that affected the UI and document the product’s offerings. I maintained a close working relationship with customers, and learnt very quickly to take a step back from their direct requests in order to address their underlying needs.

• I wrote a number of reviews of recorded music and live shows;• I conducted and wrote up a number of interviews with musical artists, both local and international.
Senior User Experience Designer And Developer
Oakton was creating a loan-management application for GE Money. When I came on board, the business analysis was difficult to decipher and the UX design was directionless, inconsistent and bore minimal relation to the business requirements. As such, development was going round in circles.I took responsibility for the UX design and worked closely with the business analysts to bring out the product rules more effectively. With a clearer vision of how the application would behave, the business rules were easier to flesh out and there was far greater collaboration with stakeholders, who could actually see how things were being planned out and provide better input.I also led the development of the UI layer using JavaServer Faces. With a UX design aligned with the business analysis, development could pick up the pace across the board, and in quick time the application as a whole was delivered to a very happy customer and impressed users. In other highlights:• I designed user interfaces for large-scale portal applications at Telstra with a strong focus on usability;• I worked closely with business analysts to flesh out project requirements and engage with business more actively via wireframing and semi-functional prototypes, thereby providing clearer goals to development teams and reducing change was development began;• I created design guidelines for large-scale applications for developers and testers to follow;• I held presentations to showcase planned user interfaces to clients;• I led the development of the UI layer across a number of projects.
Senior Front-End Engineer
• I was responsible for the UI layer of the Yellow Pages and White Pages products, working with Apache Struts and Tiles to produce standards-compliant HTML, JavaScript and CSS.• I pushed for the introduction of accessibility as an ongoing concern throughout the development of the Yellow and White Pages sites.
