I've been with Adnuntius since the beginning, designing our low latency high throughput software products and keeping them running smoothly. Back in the day before the start-up thing, I wrote software for a billion dollar upgrade to Australia’s missile frigates as well as Air Traffic Control systems that are used in some of the world’s busiest air corridors.To make sure that Adnuntius builds the right products in the right way for our high request volume low request margin business requires a bit of system design and capacity planning, a lot of discussion and prototyping (and re-prototyping!), and ultimately writing and managing services using:• Java 17 for backend services, Python for testing those services (and apart from those daily drivers I occasionally dabble in Scala, Groovy, and Golang, as well as Angular in the frontend).• Kafka and Chronicle Queue for messaging.• Postgresql database• Ansible and Bash scripts for automating deployments and managing servers (which we run Ubuntu on).• Gitlab for repository and docker image hosting and CI/CD.• Prometheus and Grafana for metrics and alerting.• Light use of AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda, API Gateway, Route 53, CloudFormation)• For networking I have set up and use (heavily!) HAProxy and Nginx for load balancing and reverse proxying, Bird for BGP announcements, and IPSec, GRE, and WireGuard for VPNs.• All the other skills and tools you would expect (except for the skill of properly enumerating skills) 😁Although conservative, the above stack is highly cost effective and runs on a small number of bare metal machines in selected data centres globally, where on a normal day it handles an average 20K requests per second with headroom for a lot more as we expand.
