I have always been a voracious reader. I was that high school kid who got in trouble for hiding a novel behind the textbook in class. I lived for the ‘ah-ha’ moments in each book where the author finally connected the pieces of information together and made my world complete.I didn’t realize until my mid-twenties, after growing as a manager, that the feeling of pure joy I got from these ‘ah-ha’ moments was my passion for learning showing itself in the most novel of ways. I was attending Texas A&M, feeding this passion through genetics and looking to be a veterinarian, when I got my first college job as a waitress. It was in the food service industry where I realized that something unique happens when individuals interact with different people day in and day out: you learn.Customer service became my new focus, engaging with others and learning from them. Naturally, this drew me away from food service and into the new challenge of retail. My first management position introduced me to concepts beyond sales and operations. I learned the importance of marketing: how to merchandise, how to build a brand, how to build an internal team, and how to reach new customer segments. I also cut my leadership teeth here, learning what it means to coach teammates and take ownership. At Under Armour, I found these concepts built a great foundation for me to continue to learn and grow in retail. I learned quickly with the help of my knowledgeable and supportive peers and gained promotions from Assistant Manager to Senior Assistant Manager, and Store Manager. It was as a store manager that my passion for learning went beyond the store setting. I wanted to know how Under Armour targeted different demographics in the various different areas and was curious to learn the development process for each new promotional message. Why did we do what we do?To satisfy this curiosity, I started marketing classes online and was instantly fascinated. My impression of marketing is that it is this wonderful combination of sales tactics, psychology, and sociology that is constantly evolving! Learning about the history of marketing and how strategies have changed to align with society’s progress has been little ‘ah-ha’ moments over and over again. Marketing has allowed me to connect my desire to help others with my need to constantly learn. It is my new passion.P.s. Did you catch my pun??
