Demonstrated a unique, previously uncharacterized mode of extracellular antiviral zinc- compound activity and developed and implemented a hypothesis-driven research plan to determine the molecular mechanism of these antivirals and elucidate the mutations that enable viral resistance. Used Pymol molecular imaging to demonstrate the impact of antiviral chemistry on viral proteins and designed a quantitative model to predict the evolutionary development of antiviral resistance in capsid proteins and predict the potential susceptibility of other picornaviruses to an equivalent drug mechanism. Managed laboratory resources, maintained equipment and chemical stocks in accordance with EHS standards, counseled undergraduate interns through guided projects, and wrote and edited grant manuscripts
