Sr. Director Of Engineering - Health ProductsRoam Robotics Jan 2019 - Mar 2022San Francisco Bay AreaAs the team lead for the Health product vertical, I was in charge of growing and leading a multidisciplinary team of engineers, soft goods designers, and clinicians as well as NPI, Quality, and Manufacturing teams. As a key member of the strategy team I designed user testing, generated product strategy, obtained FDA Class 1 listing, and registered our product for reimbursement coding in HCPCS. I directly managed a team of 8 hardware engineers, and indirectly managed a multidisciplinary team of ~20 staff. The Health product, Ascend, was a custom fabricated smart knee orthosis for individuals with knee pain, knee instability, or quadriceps weakness. The Ascend Smart Orthosis displayed a lot of promise in user testing, reducing pain and improving mobility outcomes for study participants. The product was ready for a small volume launch in Spring 2022. -
Senior Mechanical EngineerRoam Robotics Feb 2018 - Jun 2019San Francisco Bay AreaElevate, a pneumatically powered exoskeleton for downhill skiing, was Roam's first product. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer on the small team I was responsible for:- Pneumatic actuator optimization, stabilization, testing, and DFM- Valve selection and design - Structural design and testing of the Ski Exoskeleton System- DFM of 1st and 2nd generation Elevate Ski Systems and release to production -
Research Engineer Iii & Project ManagerShirley Ryan Abilitylab Sep 2016 - Jan 2018Greater Chicago AreaFormerly the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), my experience with the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is a continuation of my tenure with RIC and the Center for Bionic Medicine. The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab ranks among the top rehabilitation hospitals in the U.S. In my time at RIC and the AbilityLab, I worked with an interdisciplinary team of clinicians, students, researchers and engineers to design and develop novel rehabilitation technologies. My primary area of focus was body-powered and myoelectric prosthesis design and control. However, I also worked on a mechanical standing wheelchair, surgical implants and procedures, and tools for improving clinical care. -- PI and lead design engineer on $400,000 grant to design and evaluate custom surgical implants meant to help heal the wound site around percutaneous hardware for direct skeletal attachment of prosthetic devices-- Participated in cadaver study for innovative intramedullary limb lengthening device designed to lengthen residual limbs of individuals with limb deficiency for improved prosthetic socket fit and comfort-- Engineered standing wheelchair with mechanical hand-driven lift system to provide more accessibility to users with a lightweight and easy to transport design -- Authored or co-authored several grants for continued research and development of rehabilitation technologies (SBIR, DoD, and NIH)-- Mentored graduate students and supported them through design projects -
Research Engineer Ii & Project ManagerRehabilitation Institute Of Chicago Dec 2011 - Sep 2016Chicago, Il- Lead engineer for the development of a Voluntary-opening / Voluntary-closing prosthesis which utilized an optimized linkage system and provided critical bi-directional functionality over commercially available devices. - Designed a compact, lightweight, 5 DOF myoelectric upper limb prosthesis which met or exceeded industry standards in efficiency and speed at a fraction of the size - at the time commercially available devices were designed for the 50th percentile male. - Design and MATLAB optimization of unique linkage systems for robotic and body-powered prosthetic devices- FEA analysis of soft tissues and mechanical assemblies to determine stresses and failure modes - Noise analysis and mechanical system optimization (MATLAB) to determine root cause of noise in robotic hand and improve the input to output force ratio of the hand design- Mechanical design of 2-DOF wrist and elbow for innovative lightweight myoelectric upper limb prosthesis- Lead design engineer for novel electrical/mechanical coupler for connecting components of upper limb prosthetic devices, primarily being able to swap out different hands, hooks, and end effectors. - Designed novel electromechanical interface for custom socket liner design which utilized conductive fabric over conventional wiring. - Enclosure design for electrical and mechanical components of upper and lower limb, myoelectric prostheses- Stress shield design for percutaneous surgical pins- Friction planetary gearset design for reduced noise in motor gear stage for prosthetic arm- Design of single DOF, non-backdriveable thumb for prosthetic hand application capable of achieving three discreet grasping positions using a unique offset worm-gear design -
Contract EngineerKlein Brein, Llc Nov 2011 - Dec 2013Greater Chicago AreaThis was a LLC I started straight out of my undergraduate program.
