I am passionate about improving health equity for vulnerable populations in healthcare. I have spent the past six years working in healthcare in Baltimore and D.C. in order to better understand and assist diverse patients. In my undergraduate and post-graduate time, I have worked hard to mobilize my knowledge in a manner that yields patient-centered results through research. I have conducted research on mental health trends of medical weight loss patients in Baltimore during the pandemic in order to highlight the coping strategies of niche populations that are often overlooked. I have also spent time working with Veterans in healthcare settings, advocating for holistic disability packets. At the forefront of my work is advocating for the "patient voice". In doing this, I believe that penetrating communities and hearing from patients themselves is the most vital aspect of implementing effective care strategies. Much of my volunteer work is focused on understanding the social dynamics of the patient populations I serve in a medical context. This allows me to assist these populations in a culturally competent manner. Furthermore, I have prioritized preventative and early screening efforts in my community interventions and worked to create a partnership between my undergraduate university and the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center to better prepare premedical undergraduate students for culturally competent care in underserved communities.
