Here’s how they informed my practice.As an Administrative Assistant to the C-Suite of Harvard Community Health Plan (now Harvard Pilgrim), I learned an appreciation for executive leadership and quality management. My experience working on a Phase II Merck drug trial introduced me to the ins and outs of Big Pharma – and all the challenges of bringing a drug to market. My clinical, operational knowledge and team leadership skills were sharpened as a young administrator at a for-profit surgery center owned by Osteopathic Health Systems of Texas (a pre-cursor to services provided now by UNT Health Science Center). While working as a Market Director at Harris Methodist Health Systems (now Texas Health Resources), I learned hard lessons as we rushed out full-risk contracts before having the data transparency systems in place. The incident taught me humility and how to speak out forcefully when the math doesn’t add up. (Value-Based Payments are still a challenge today for this very reason). Working with new market development teams at Amerigroup and Centene allowed me to bring all my previous skill sets to bear in an industry that now plays a pivotal role in connecting people to care.I’m grateful for how this varied experience has informed my consulting practice. It has taught me that today’s needs may outstrip available resources, but you can make an appreciable difference with some ingenuity and the careful selection of willing partners. I remain optimistic, grateful, and always willing to meet and connect.
