This role centred on detecting and resolving a range of security incidents using analysis tools such as CrowdStrike, Trend Micro, Microsoft Sentinel, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, JOE Sandbox, and Qualys. As part of my remit, I identified and analysed sophisticated PowerShell-based malware using CrowdStrike EDR and CyberChef for rapid decryption and analysis, and decoded Base64-encoded payloads. This revealed malicious commands aimed at data exfiltration, enabling quick isolation and remediation of infected systems. I was able to understand industry-specific attack vectors and identify techniques such as spear-phishing and PowerShell, by mapping threat actor TTPs using the MITRE ATT&CK framework and analysing detected events. In a similar vein, I developed a detection strategy for APTs by analysing spear-phishing, zero-day exploits, and lateral movements, and conducted a detailed analysis of security breaches and malware attacks to identify vulnerabilities and prevent future incidents. Finally, my role included managing organisational responses to data breaches, ransomware attacks, phishing detections and DDOS incidents.

This role allowed me to serve as a member of Cargill Global SOC’s Incident Response team, in which I investigated security events via Microsoft Sentinel SIEM, Tanium EDR, and Proofpoint email protection. Accountability also lay with me to design and deliver training programs on incident response techniques that improved team readiness and efficiency and to mentor junior analysts in the handling of complex cybersecurity challenges. I very much enjoyed the opportunity to inform C-suite decision-making processes by collaborating with executives to consider incident impacts and response outcomes, and similarly, I led the monthly generation of security metrics and KPIs dashboards, thereby increasing management’s visibility into security posture. Finally, I developed reports detailing trend analyses, incident overviews, and performance evaluations.

Doing so enabled me to successfully identify and mitigate malicious activities using alerts from diverse technologies. I also utilised FireEye’s advanced network and host forensic capabilities to triage and analyse security incidents, enhancing the precision of incident assessments, and spearheading automation initiatives using Splunk significantly accelerated the speed of incident analysis and response processes.
