Pagemasters handles sub-editing for APN daily papers and the New Zealand Herald. Main tasks were quick and accurate handling of copy under pressure, teamwork and liaison with chief reporters and editors in the papers' newsrooms. Also worked shifts subbing for the New Zealand Herald. Left role to take up self-employment.

New Caledonia

Working in English and French,the role covered external and internal communications, journalism, media advocacy and training, and human rights awareness work in and through the Pacific media. Selected activities included:+ Writing press releases for transmission to Pacific media and other stakeholders reflecting activities and raising awareness of SPC and HDP work programmes. These releases were widely used in Pacific media. + Devised and delivered the media communications plan, for both French and English-language media, for the 10th Triennial Conference of Pacific Women in mid-2007. + Organised and ran, in partnership with UNESCO (Apia) and the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (London), the Pacific Women in Media Action Plan Symposium in Nadi, September 2006. Wrote all media training resources for the follow-up event at the Pacific Island News Association conference in 2007.+ Authored chapter Gender, Media and Development: What is the connection? Responsible for then newly-launched employment-related sections, Career, Management, WorkIT and Training Place, which provided topical, lively content on employment and career issues. The role required strong feature writing, editing, freelance commissioning/management and budgeting skills. The writing workload was mostly 1300-word features on management and corporate issues as well as profiles and general employment/management-related news stories for the business and news sections. Worked closely with freelance writing staff and in-house subbing and production staff. A strategic focus on content was rewarded with markedly increased readership figures.

Guided a content revamp and the production of five weekly community papers with 12 staff (photographer, two subs, nine young writers) and worked across all levels of the company. Team commendations while editor: Qantas Media Awards, 2001: The Papatoetoe and Otahuhu Week, finalist, best community newspaper; Qantas, 2000: Shore News, finalist, best community newspaper; Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers Association Awards 2000: Shore News, finalist, best community newspaper.

The Courier is a twice-weekly community paper with a controlled circulation at that time of around 50,000. Led four writers and one photographer, and worked with teams of subs, production people and the sales manager. Commonwealth Media Awards, 1998: East and Bays Courier, winner, best community paper.

Roles between 1987 and 1997 included stints with the Sunday Star-Times (1987-1990); sub-editing at the Leicester Mercury, UK; senior feature writer with the Young People Now, the monthly magazine of the (UK) National Youth Agency (1990-late 1993); freelance writing for the (UK) Guardian's education section (1990-1993); and part-time writing for the New Zealand Listener and the SST while studying 1994-1996.
