Profile bio

About Austin Mcintyre

I was never not going to be an engineer; it was inevitable. After all, when you spend your childhood stealing your dad's screwdriver and using it to secretly dismantle all your toys because you're more interested in learning how they work than you are in playing with them, what else could you possibly become? Since then, I've worked to explore every aspect of engineering and I've found a passion in each one. I found a passion for leadership and project management, a passion for communication and creative technical writing, a passion for design and CAD modeling, a passion for problem solving and analysis. An unending fascination with space and aircraft lead me to graduate from ISU with a bachelor's in aerospace engineering, but while I was there, I took every opportunity to further all of my engineering passions. I took industrial design and data analysis courses, lead and managed various engineering teams, always ensured my reports and presentations overshadowed all of my classmates', and took up personal projects to expand my programming, drafting, and writing skills. After graduating, I took a job as a design engineer at Iowa Rotocast Plastics, as the opportunities it offered were perfect for an recent graduate. Working directly with production on custom projects has allowed me to hone my existing skills and learn many new ones, like CNC programming.I'd still like to join the aerospace industry, but ultimately, my passion is engineering, whatever form it takes. I'm still walking the path that began long ago with that box of dismantled toys, and I'm as excited as I've ever been to see where it leads me to next.

Sales Associate

Ankeny, Iowa, United States

Working as a sales associate at Staples required me to fill nearly every role a retail employee could have, moving about the store as needed to assist customers, fill stock, clean, organize shelves, set-up displays, assist in tech and print, etc. I would often work directly with customers to walk them through all parts of a sale; greeting them, inquiring about their shopping needs, asking various follow-ups to determine and show them which product or products would best solve their problem, and… Show more Working as a sales associate at Staples required me to fill nearly every role a retail employee could have, moving about the store as needed to assist customers, fill stock, clean, organize shelves, set-up displays, assist in tech and print, etc. I would often work directly with customers to walk them through all parts of a sale; greeting them, inquiring about their shopping needs, asking various follow-ups to determine and show them which product or products would best solve their problem, and then checking them out, answering any questions they may have along the way. Communication and task-management between coworkers was also extremely important, as we’d often be spread throughout the store, and thus would need to coordinate with each other to make sure each task for the day was completed while assisting customers in every part of the store. As I was employed there during the summer, part of my job was setting up the back-to-school displays, products and promotional programs. Because many of my coworkers during the second summer I was employed lacked prior experience, I was often tasked with leading and teaching them as they joined the team, as well as organizing and assigning them tasks during back-to-school set up to ensure all the product was ready by the time the rush began. Organization was key to ensure the products, the majority of which arrived all at once, were stored in not only a space-efficient manner, as there was very limited space, but a manner that would allow the many similarly-packaged products to be easily found and brought down when needed. Once the rush began, I needed to work much more closely with customers as I assisted them in finding the supplies their children required for the upcoming school-year, using the time spent with them to upsell products as the opportunities to do so arose, often using their children’s enthusiasm for the larger and more colorful products to help ensure the sale’s success. Working as a cashier at Sam's Club over the two summers, I assisted a wide range of customers, including everyday grocery shoppers, families of various sizes, business owners, government employees, and event organizers, ensuring their individual needs were met and their transaction went smoothly. This required that I be able to process many different types of transactions and communicate clearly with the customer, all while working quickly and accurately to scan each of their items, with sales often consisting of hundreds of products. Along with this, I became adept at promoting the store's membership upgrades and MasterCards, tailoring my pitch to each customer by focusing on which feature they would likely benefit from most. For example, if the customer was a small-business owner, they may comment about how busy the store is and about being in a rush to get back to their busniess, to which I'd mention that the membership upgrade grants access to earlier shopping hours, ideal for avoiding not only avoiding long lines, but also having to shop in the middle of the workday.Clear communication was also key when watching over the self-checkout area, a duty I often volunteered for due to its more active nature. I'd often be looking over half a dozen customers simultaneously, answering any questions, fixing the various issues that the kiosks often encountered, and directing waiting customers to kiosks as they became free to ensure the area ran smoothly.
