GANNETT, Design Studio, Phoenix, AZ (working remotely) 2017 – PresentDesigner, Sports Thanks in large part to my more varied experience with news and sports design, I landed the role of lead sports designer for USA TODAY. I also have continued designing other products that print in locations across the country.• Maintain collaborative relationships with representatives of the product sites, selling them on the best designs for the stories they wanted to tell.• Serve as an unspoken team leader, most often as a source of knowledge for coworkers when they work with newspapers they have not worked with before.• Helped to transition the design of the New Jersey newspapers to Phoenix when the Asbury Park design studio closed.

My team of 15 designers and page editors spearheads the design and page editing of the news and sports sections, including cover pages, of The Record of North Jersey (Bergen, NJ), The Journal News (Westchester, NY) and the Poughkeepsie (NY) Journal. We also are in charge of booking the sections based on a daily priority list provided by each newspaper. We meet to discuss designs nightly and I try to put everyone in the best possible position to succeed. I work with the newspaper sites to balance the look of the paper with the newspaper's desire to get in as much news as possible.The Record is in the beginning stages, as it was recently purchased by Gannett. I have been part of the transition team over the course of two months as we prepared to guide the newspaper into the studio.

Designed multiple Sports sections nightly, working with editors to produce centerpieces with impact, consisting of layers of information, including quotes, statistics and other breakouts. Also, I often advised coworkers on writing headlines and adding other editorial content to add depth to their designs -- something that helped me get promoted to team leader.

• Designed the Sunday sports section each week, which involved a Friday night of planning, putting together breakouts and feature packages and coding and edited schedules, rosters, statistical leaders and matchup capsules for weekly Eagles/NFL or Phillies/Major League Baseball preview pages – depending on the season – as well as a full day Saturday designing live pages, choosing photos and proofing each page for accuracy and headline quality before sending.• Spent most of each week editing stories, writing headlines and photo captions and updating the Web site throughout the evening and at the end of each night using Publicus program.• Wrote a college football blog that includes my own weekly rankings as well as other interesting tidbits.• Wrote a recurring notebook-style column on sports from a fan’s perspective and occasional other stories.
