About Audrey Farrell

I am a Ph.D. candidate in physics at UCLA with a focus on laser-plasma interactions. Under the supervision of my advisor, Chan Joshi, I have performed several experiments characterizing magnetic field generation in laser-produced plasmas. I specialize in the design and analysis of plasma diagnostics including Thomson scattering, interferometry, Faraday rotation, and electron beam deflectometry. In addition to work in my lab at UCLA, I have been involved in several experiments at the Accelerator Test Facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory, and am currently the co-PI of AE134, which aims to measure simultaneous Biermann battery and Wiebel instability induced magnetic fields in a CO2 laser driven plasma. As an undergraduate student I worked as a research assistant in nuclear physics, designing and optimizing particle detectors using simulation and data analysis as well as in plasma accelerator physics. I completed my honors thesis on developing less computationally expensive simulations of plasma accelerators by combining plasma theory and algorithm optimization. I also supported myself throughout college through a series of customer service oriented part-time jobs, and believe that the interpersonal skills developed in these jobs have benefited my ability to effectively communicate in science.
