Research Associate Ii/Iii

Springfield, Missouri Area

Research associate in the flexible hybrid electronics business unit. This role required an understanding of how material properties change under certain stimuli, how to design sensing platforms to probe when an active material’s properties change, and the methods of how to fabricate the sensing platform and deposit the active material. Intrinsic material properties were investigated using methods such as Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The sensing platform was characterized using white light interferometry, optical comparison, and electrical measurements. The design of the sensor platform was all performed in AutoCAD. Root cause analysis was performed using Design of Experiments to explore relationships between intrinsic material properties and fabrication techniques to sensor performance and manufacturing yield. Testing methods were designed to characterize printed sensors for temperature, humidity, stress/strain, water monitoring, and air quality measurements. Test methods were developed into automated routines through scripting and eventually to the development of graphical user interface for real time test control. Graphical user interfaces were developed in Python utilizing Tkinter to produce executables capable of manually controlling test equipment or performing automated testing routines.

Instructed Introduction to Physics I (PHY 123) course and lab

Jan 2019 - May 2019

Graduate Research Assistant

Springfield, Missouri, United States

Obtained the NASA Missouri Space Grant Consortium (NASA-MOSGC) fellowship for my M.S. thesis research project. The funded research was focused on thin film transition metal dichalcogenide materials with applications in space travel and habitation. The research goal was to investigate the use of pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and sputtering to be able to produce the correct crystal structure that had been shown to have superconductive properties at low temperatures. Investigation of the crystal structure was performed using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and verification was performed using Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Secondary research projects included metal oxide nanomaterials for renewable energy and nano-bio interactions between graphene and amino acids. I also worked with several undergraduate students in teaching them how to properly use the material synthesis and analytical tools.

Dayton, Ohio, United States

Obtained a research fellowship at Wright Patterson Air Force Base through the Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program. I collaborated with resident research scientists on site to investigate using single layer graphene, carbon nanotubes, and fullerenes for targeted drug delivery and biosensor systems. The primary interest of the research was to understand the interaction between carbonaceous defects and amino acids. The deposition of amino acids to the carbon materials was performed using drop casing and dip coating and the investigation of the interaction was performed using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy.
