Projects were selected for the… Show more The COMBIO – Commercialisation of Biomaterials technology programme was established to fuel commercial development of the health care biomaterials industry in Finland. With the program the development of start-up pioneering companies were nurtured, while enabling the creation of new internationally and financially profitable business in the health care biomaterials industry. The basic principle for the COMBIO programme was to accelerate commercialisation. Projects were selected for the programme with respect to the commercialisation potential of their research results. BThe programme focused on three key themes: implants, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. When selecting individual research projects, one of the decisive fac- tors was whether they had the potential to pro- ceed as viable companies as soon as the pro- gramme was over. A total of 31 projects were conducted within the COMBIO programme: 13 in public research, 17 enterprise projects, and one project in a hospital district. The public projects were joint projects by several research teams, including those from companies. The topics were divided as follows: implants, 19 projects; drug delivery, 9 projects; and tissue engineering, 3 projects. The total volume of the programme 2003–2007 amounted to €30.3 million, of which Tekes financed €21.3 million. The participants included 31 research units from ten different organizations, and 22 companies with emphasis on program services that would accelerate the commercialization.
