As part of my project I studied the feasibility of using magnetotelluric data to detect overhangs in salt dome structure, an important problem for hydrocarbon exploration. In addition I included static distortion into my MT inversion code. This allows me to invert highly distorted datasets.

My main task was to develop a three-dimensional magnetotelluric inversion methodology. I combined limited memory quasi-Newton optimization techniques with an integral equation based forward code.
