My experience covers the legal, transactional and financial elements of ESOPs and qualified and non-qualified employee benefit plans. I specialize in fiduciary issues related to ESOPs and other qualified benefit plans, and have particular expertise in technical compliance issues including plan correction using the Internal Revenue Service’s Employee Plans Compliance Resolution Systems (“EPCRS”) and the US Department of Labor’s Voluntary Fiduciary Correction Program (“VFCP”).I started my career in the banking industry, having served as in-house counsel for the retirement plan services area of both KeyCorp and National City Bank; learning the ESOP business from the trust side. I then moved into private practice, where I developed “corporate side” ESOP expertise.I am now opening the Cleveland Ohio office of SG&F. The Midwest offers a tremendous opportunity for ESOPs due to its entrepreneurial base of manufacturing and technology related businesses. I’m also a “tried and true” Clevelander, having lived here for 54 years and graduating from Case Western Reserve University with a B.S. in Accounting and my law degree.In addition to having legal, technical and fiduciary expertise, I grew up in a family business which aids in my understanding of issues unique to owners of potential ESOP companies. My “practical” business life experience has proven invaluable in understanding the issues of ESOP companies.I am a member of the Legal and Regulatory Committee of the ESOP Association. As a recognized expert in the field, I frequently present at NCEO and ESOP Association conferences and also provide local seminars to various employee benefit organizations.
