About Avery Mcevoy, Eit

At RMI, I help run the Virtual Power Plant Partnership (VP3), a coalition of energy technology and service providers aiming to scale the market for virtual power plants. I lead our regulatory and policy work, project manage our biannual in-person member convenings, drive strategy, and support member engagement. Prior to the VP3 project, I performed data analysis and energy modeling of the US electricity sector to facilitate the transition to a decarbonized energy future. I believe in the power of facilitative problem solving, data and analysis, and clear science communication to achieve actionable, tangible change. We are in the decisive decade, with a looming climate tipping point on the horizon in 2030—and I believe we are up to the challenge. Through a focused, concerted, innovative effort, we can accelerate the deployment of flexible electrified devices, renewables, and demand-side management technologies to make clean energy reliable, accessible, and affordable for all. Looking forward to connecting!

Lecturer for CEE 107A/207A/ EarthSys 103: Understanding Energy (Fall, Spr, Sum): a blockbuster energy course for any and all students that want to increase their energy literacy! Energy is the number one contributor to climate change, and this course dives broadly into all aspects of energy -- fossil fuels, renewables, energy efficiency, electricity, the grid, transportation, and more. The class includes 80-min lectures, discussion sections, weekly homeworks, midterm and final exam, and on-campus and off-campus field trips to different energy centers around California.Lecturer for CEE 107R/207R: Extreme Energy Efficiency (Win): a unique 6-day experiential course that takes place at the Rocky Mountain Institute's Innovation Center in Basalt, Colorado. Selected students travel to Colorado to learn from world-renowned energy guru Amory Lovins about energy efficiency and integrative design with different themes for each day: buildings, transportation, industry, and implementation and implications, including renewable energy synergy and integration. Students participate in design charrettes, implementing the principles of integrative design and systems-level thinking to solve challenging questions posed each day.

Schneider Fellow in the Islands Energy Program team at the Rocky Mountain Institute, a think-and-do tank that provides market-based engineering solutions for various stakeholders to secure a decarbonized energy future. Identified over 23,000 critical facilities across Puerto Rico that provide essential services during and after a disaster. Generated hourly load profiles for 36 different types of critical facilities by modeling their critical loads. Sized solar PV and lithium-ion battery storage microgrid systems for each critical facility type using HOMER microgrid modeling software. Estimated the total MW and MWh of solar and storage, respectively, needed to power critical loads at critical facilities across the islands of Puerto Rico to increase energy resilience and autonomy.

Terrestrial Hydrology Intern

Performed research with Senior Water Scientist James Famiglietti in the Terrestrial Hydrology group. Used remote sensing data from the GRACE satellite in combination with in situ reservoir measurements, modeled soil moisture data, and modeled snow water equivalent data to calculate groundwater storage variations during the 2011-15 drought and 2016-17 recovery period. Although too soon to tell if the groundwater recovered, research showed a steep decline in groundwater storage during the 2011-15 drought, emphasizing the need for a groundwater management framework across California.

Results were used to develop a compliance strategy to meet the requirements of SCAQMD Rule 442.• Prepared hazardous waste reportable quantities under toxic release inventory (Form R) reporting for an asphalt manufacturing facility pursuant to Section 313 of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986.• Presented a technical talk about California Air Resources Board’s Short-Lived Climate Pollutant regulation.
