My time at Auburn University has allowed me to enhance my knowledge immensely about the fields of both psychology and social work. I have gained various experience working within the Auburn community that gave me the opportunity to increase my emotional intelligence and practice my communication skills with all types of people. For reference, during the fall semester of my sophomore year, I completed a practicum for my social work minor with BraveHearts Center for Place and Purpose, an organization right on Auburn's campus that focuses on enhancing the lives of young adults with disabilities. This experience allowed me to work in my area of study while completing reflective coursework, as well as my own research about the stigma and discrimination that these individuals battle daily.Fighting against discrimination in all aspects of our society is one thing that has always been important to me. Growing up with my brother, who was adopted as an infant, provided me with a unique perspective about racial and cultural factors within our society. I have worked to build skills and gain resources which give me the ability to be empathetic in any situation and will bring this outlook into my career. I have been lucky enough to travel out of the country multiple times for both volunteer work and exploration. Before studying abroad, the service trip I went on in high school to Grenada, was the farthest I had travelled from home, alone, and was incredibly influential when it was time to decide what I wanted to major in. My work in Grenada was extensive but primarily focused on teaching kids, who were afraid of the water, how to swim to reduce drownings in their community. This required patience and optimism to build a genuine and trusting connection with the child. I believe my experiences throughout my life, as well as my coursework and community involvement from being a student at Auburn will continue to benefit me in my future career and life goals.
