About Avery Schiff

I recently completed a PhD program in Astrophysics and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder. During my time in the program, I found the most fulfillment crafting the software that allowed us to perform and investigate rigorous simulations of immensely complex physical systems. Since graduating, I've therefore honed my skills as a software engineer.     I did research at the University of Colorado Boulder with Steven Cranmer. During that time, my research focus was creating numerical simulations of the solar corona and solar wind in Python and C. Rapid changes in the Sun's atmosphere require high resolution simulations, so my work often necessitated analysis of large data sets created by our simulations.In August 2015 I was awarded the George Ellery Hale Graduate Fellowship from the National Solar Observatory. In 2017 I was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

    I worked as an undergraduate research assistant at Williams College with Jay Pasachoff during the summer of 2014 as part of an NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program.As part of the research project, I traveled to New Zealand to observe objects in the far reaches of the solar system, including Pluto, its moons, and Quaoar. I then analyzed our data with software I developed in Python.
