I am a Professor of Pediatrics, Associate Dean for Global Health and Director of Global Health Education at Wake Forest University School of Medicine (WFUSM) and Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Atrium Health-Wake Forest Baptist-Brenner Children's Hospital, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA. After earning my medical degree (MBBS) and completing a pediatric residency (MD, DCH) in Mumbai, India, I completed a pediatric residency and ambulatory/general academic pediatric fellowship at Louisiana State University School of Medicine, followed by fellowship training in Pediatric Infectious Disease at Stanford University School of Medicine. I joined the faculty at WFUSM in 2001.I am passionate about global health. While training at Stanford University School of Medicine as a pediatric infectious disease fellow in 1998, I developed a keen interest in prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) during breastfeeding in Zimbabwe, Africa. From 2001 to 2012, I led perinatal HIV prevention studies in Zimbabwe in my role as on-site Scientific Director and as the Principal Investigator (PI) at WFUSM. These studies were funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. I also served as co-PI on a Fogarty NIH-funded project aimed at capacity building of biomedical scientists in India.I am a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, an elected Fellow of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society and the Infectious Disease Society of America, an elected Member of the American Pediatric Society and Society for Pediatric Research. I also serve as the WFUSM Representative at the Consortium of Universities in Global Health. I am a Visiting Professor at many international academic institutions including University of Navarra, Spain, University of Tokai, Japan, UCIMED Costa Rica, and Nitte (deemed to be) University/K.S. Hegde Medical Academy, Mangalore, India.My clinical and research interests and expertise include HIV Prevention from Mothers to Infants, Maternal and Newborn Health, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine Implementation to Prevent Cervical Cancer, Antimicrobial Resistance, Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases, and Tropical Medicine. I have published more than 200 journal articles, invited reviews and textbook chapters. I have served on U.S. CDC Special Emphasis Panels on Infectious Diseases and serve on the Editorial Board of Pediatric Review and Education Program (PREP) of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
