My work on plasmonic based detection platform utilizing nanostructured gratings with simple micro-contact printing from low cost HD-DVD substrates created detection platforms that are able to sense single molecules of materials of interest (including detection of viruses, bacteria, explosive compounds with applications in healthcare and law enforcement) at a price point several orders of magnitude lower than the previous available technologies. The process was a multi-disciplinary area of research requiring the use of plasmonic physics, nanoengineering, lithography (including working with electron microscopy, sputtering, CVD, ellipsometry, AFM), biological and chemical engineering, as well as data processing and analysis using Originlabs, Mathematica, Red Hat Linux, Python. The data analysis to detect single molecules was largely performed using the software techniques in python while the process of developing the platform was part of electrical engineering. The project was a multi-year cross specialization effort that required me to work across multiple engineering disciplines and collaborate with multiple departments to perform the experiments and data analysis. Worked on improving the circuit design involved in such printed devices to reduce the cost of implementation in the market and make such a printing based technique more viable in bendable devices. Evaluated the performance of state of the art Inorganic based printed materials in comparison to Organic based dyes to produce better NMOS based FET devices. In my role as a Research Assistant at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, I created a simulation and optimization process for inorganic printed electronics. The physical MOSFET devices that were built using nanolithography, were simulated by me using PSPICE and Cadence software in order to understand their physical and electrical characteristics. The novelty of these devices was due to the inorganic compounds used in their fabrication, which resulted in electronic characteristics being unlike the standard organic devices in the market and requiring a new process to simulate their use cases. By performing the data analysis from experimental data in python and creating simulation profiles for the devices in PSPICE software, the characteristics of these Zinc Oxide and Indium Oxide based printed MOSFET devices were modeled for future use and optimization before fabrication. In addition, a number of logical devices such as NAND, NOR, Inverter gates as well as Flip-Flops and memory circuits were simulated based on this data. These universal gate devices are chosen due to their applicability in practical applications in microprocessors and ease of printability in the near future. The use of these devices in simulation of real world circuits also gives an insight on the applicability with low cost printed devices. Show less
