The managing editor is the secondary leadership position at The Channels. The managing editor provides support to the editor in chief in his or her myriad duties, and should assume primary responsibility in mutually agreed on areas. In rare cases where the editor in chief is unable to assume her or his key duties, the managing editor is authorized to act in the EIC’s stead. As part of my role at Al-Bilad, I oversee the daily publishing operations and supervise writers, editors and other staff. I suggest ideas for stories and see them through to publication. I also review and enforce policies and procedures used by the publication’s editors, reporters, photographers and news clerks. I set times for editorial meetings, deadlines for sending the newspaper to the pressroom for printing and which pages will include color. In special circumstances, I make the decision to stray from the normal policy.I am the primary liaison between the editorial staff and the publisher and editor in chief. I communicate directly with the publisher on a frequent basis. I also may communicate with the advertising department. This is often the case when the advertising department chooses to publish a special section and needs the editorial side’s assistance in providing copy. The managing editor also fields emails and phone calls from the public.Responsibilities: • Plan and manage all daily operations.• Hire, coach and supervise personnel.• Determine issues’ content and topics.• Coordinate editorial publications and meetings.• Plan and approve assignments for writers and editors.• Control schedules and enforce deadlines (for writers, photographers, designers etc.).• Oversee proofreading procedures and edit copy when necessary.• Assist in evaluating finalized copy for compliance with policies, style and tone.• Resolve issues as they arise.• Attend events on behalf of the company or editor in chief.
