About Azam Mehboob

I am a passionate communications and radar systems engineer with more than 16 years of industry experience. My core skills are in digital receiver signal processing algorithms and communications waveform design. I spent most of my career in working and leading multi-disciplinary development teams and overseeing the process of deploying practical signal processing algorithms on real-time SDR platforms. I fully understand the computational and power constraints of embedded platforms and how to trade off algorithm performance for computational complexity.Over the years, I co-founded a technology company Renzym, and designed receivers and waveforms for satellite downlinks, wireless LANs/WANs, MIMO-OFDM systems, passive radars, LEO optical links, maritime radars, serial and multi-tone tactical radios and telemetry systems. I have an excellent understanding of telecommunication standards, wireless and radar technologies. My strengths lie in my passion for solving challenging problems, quickly grasping deep technical concepts and in-depth understanding of the key trade-offs involved in communications and radar system design. Being a cofounder of a technology company, I have the entrepreneurial instincts to see beyond everyday work and look for innovative solutions to address the market needs.Currently, I am a Signal Processing Team Lead at Daronmont Technologies. My main responsibilities include improving Daronmont's existing passive radar product by adding new capabilities and technically leading passive radar projects. I hold a PhD in Information Communication Technology from the University of South Australia. During my PhD, I worked on designing highly spectrally-efficient transmission techniques for future earth observation satellite downlinks. I proposed new modulation and coding schemes that significantly improve the spectral efficiency of the existing satellite communications systems.

In this role, I was involved in different projects with multiple stakeholders from industry, academia, and the Australian Defence Science and Technology (DST) Group. Here is a brief description of the projects and my responsibilities. - Optimal Waveform Design for Maritime Scanning Radars: In this work, I developed waveforms to detect slow-moving targets for scanning maritime radars in heavy sea-clutter. I also modeled and simulated sea clutter at low grazing angles for shipborne maritime radars. This work was a collaboration between the UniSA, REDARC Electronics, Raytheon Anschutz GmbH, DST Group, and the University of Adelaide.- Compact Hybrid Optical/RF User Terminal (CHORUS): This project aimed to develop a highly integrated hybrid Optical-RF tactical terminal. It was a joint venture of Defence Science and Technology (DST) Group, UniSA, EM Solutions, SHOAL Group and some other partners. My role was to design a communication waveform that can exploit the available RF channel to increase the reliability and throughput of the optical/RF hybrid link.- Lunar Search and Rescue (LunaSAR): This project involved the study of initial design options for NASA’s LunaSAR project for supporting the safety of astronauts as part of the Moon to Mars ARTEMIS program. I was part of a team working on the proposal of a LunaSAR system for NASA. My role was to do lunar channel modeling and link budget analysis for ground-to-ground and ground-to-space links.

I was responsible for signal processing algorithm development as an engineering manager in the areas of wireless communication and radar system design. Other responsibilities included technical proposal writing, conducting technical trainings, evaluating new product ideas and setting company’s direction for sustainable growth. Below is a summary of my key contributions.- SDR Products: At Renzym, we were focused on the development of hardware equipment and software tools that facilitate communication system design by reducing implementation effort. Our target customers were educational institutes, individual professionals, and organizations involved in wireless communication research and development. Over the years, we created a range of communications kits, transceivers and software tools to serve different segments of this market. I technically contributed to these products and was also heavily involved in business plan development, customer engagement, technical trainings, and marketing campaigns.- Real-time MIMO-OFDM testbed: This was a funded project by National ICT-R&D Fund, Pakistan. I was the team lead of a group responsible for the development and real-time implementation of MIMO-OFDM testbed using GNU radio framework and USRP hardware. My own technical contribution was to design packet detection and synchronization modules. In addition, I was also responsible for managing a multi-disciplinary team, preparing project deliverables and writing technical reports. - Communication Security Products: There was a market requirement for upgrading and securing the old communication radio equipment used by the defense organizations in Pakistan. I led the development of a low-cost encryption module and a speech scrambler to increase the security and voice quality of radio equipment such as long-range HF radios and short-range VHF handheld tactical radios.

I started my professional career with Center for Advanced Research in Engineering, one of Pakistan’s leading R&D organizations. My core responsibilities included algorithms developed for wireless communication systems. I was part of a larger group that also included DSP/FPGA developers, PCB designers, and software engineers. I was also responsible for interacting with the customers during deliverable acceptance, test trials, and technical trainings.- Digital Radio Surveillance Equipment: It was a highly flexible and generalized receiver that can be configured to receive a range of satellite and terrestrial communication signals with different formats. It was a challenging task as it was one of the first products of its kind in Pakistan. I designed a completely blind receiver architecture for performing receiver tasks such as automatic gain control, carrier recovery, timing synchronization and modulation classification. I was also involved in preparing technical documentation, conducting field trials, and providing after-sale technical support to the client.- IF telemetry system: In this project, I developed algorithms for a digital, half duplex, telemetry system that can communicate up to 2 Mbps using binary PCM-FM (FSK). My major contribution was to develop NDA symbol timing synchronizer, differential detection of PCM-FM signals with variable modulation index and NDA SNR estimator.- Real-time DQPSK Modem: I designed and implemented a DQPSK modem on Taxes Instrument’s (TI) C6x floating point DSP using Code Composer Studio. This modem was used for digitization of analog VHF voice radios. It was a complete implementation of modem physical layer.
