I spent 20 months working as an Assistant Ecologist at The Ecology Partnership. My responsibilities included carrying out various surveys such as Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs) and Preliminary Roost Assessments (PRAs), in addition to a number of protected species surveys such as reptile, dormouse, bat and great crested newt.I was also responsible for writing and delivering reports including PEAs, PRAs, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessment reports, protected species survey reports (including reptiles, dormice, bats and nesting birds), and reptile mitigation strategies.Lastly, my responsibilities included carrying out ecological watching briefs for work such as nesting bird checks and habitat clearance.

I spent a year at the Game and Wildlife Conservation trust, a charitable organisation that specialises in game and wildlife management as a form of conservation. Within this organisation I was a part of the Farmland Ecology research unit and was involved with a number of their conservation projects. The majority of my time was taken up by the department’s long-term invertebrate monitoring projects. The overall aim of these studies is to investigate long-term trends in insect numbers across a variety of crop types, farming methods and agro-environmental schemes, such as conservation headlands and beetle banks, carried out at a number of farming estates across England including Sandringham, Houghton Hall and Loddington. On several estates there is an additional goal to study the abundance of insects that make up the diet of grey partridge chicks and to assess whether the investigated habitats could successfully support a healthy grey partridge population. I also assisted the trust with a variety of other fieldwork projects. Some of my tasks included constructing and distributing over 40 owl boxes to various farming clusters for the Barn Owl project and, once the breeding season started, monitoring a few of the boxes for potential breeding pairs and chicks. I was also heavily involved with the FRAMEwork project for the trust which aimed to assess the success of creating farming clusters to improve local biodiversity. Within this project I greatly improved my visual and auditory bird ID skills while carrying out early morning bird transects, and, I was also responsible for the construction, distribution and collection of a number of pan traps that were set-up to investigate pollinator abundance in a variety of farmland habitats. Lastly, I was involved with the collection of over 1000 bean samples for the Beespoke project. These beans were a demonstrative plant used to investigate the difference in effectiveness between open pollination and hand pollination by bees.
