I used to teach history to college students. In my previous job I got to indulge a fascination with national security issues and their influence on modern American history. My interest in cybersecurity began there but expanded and deepened as news of cyberattacks came to dominate the headlines with increasing regularity. Combined with a long-standing interest in computers, the cybersecurity field seemed an obvious fit when the opportunity arose to try something different.As a student in the cybersecurity program at Columbus State I have worked to develop my technical skills, especially with respect to Linux, server configuration, and networking. At GBQ Partners I have put those skills along with my cybersecurity coursework into practice through NIST CSF-based cybersecurity assessments, vulnerability scanning, configuration reviews, network penetration tests, as well as in a hands-on support role for the company's end users.At a glance, my current role may seem a far cry from my previous one. However, my background has helped me cultivate intellectual curiosity, an analytical mindset, and strong communication skills, both verbal and written. It has taught me the importance of self-motivation, deadlines, and task prioritization. The skillset and outlook that I cultivated during that period has proved to be an asset in my new career, not just in terms of acquiring new technical skills or mastering new topics, but also in interactions with clients and colleagues.
