I designed and managed a research project about climate change impacts to the ocean and glaciers in the subsistence hunting community of Qaanaaq in Greenland. I initiated a collaboration with scientists and professors from Hokkaido University, who had established research operations in Qaanaaq. I made coast and ocean predictions by modeling simulations on the oceanic, atmospheric, biogeochemical, and cryospheric processes. Funding/Budgeting: To support the PhD project, I wrote a funding proposal and was awarded a grant to fund the entirety of my PhD as well as an additional $15,000 a year for research costs. I budgeted the $15,000/yr to support my travel, field work efforts, educational/training courses, conference attendance, equipment, and processing of water samples. Research: I investigated physical oceanographic and chemical oceanographic features in the local estuary and fjord. This included tides, nutrient cycling, water fluxes, glacial sediments, and biological (birds, plankton, fish) responses to these. I investigated climate change impacts to the ecosystem to aid conservation efforts. Svalbard Fieldwork: I attended the Climate Change Biology course at the University Centre in Svalbard where I practiced fieldwork safety in remote arctic locations. I practiced navigation, trekking, avalanche safety, car driving, snowmobile driving, and polar bear safety. I learned how to safely carry and use a rifle and flare gun to protect myself and others from polar bears. I conducted snowpack measurements, geological assessments, and counted reindeer populations.

For my master’s thesis research, I investigated the relationship between the ocean and atmosphere at the mesoscale in a project funded by NASA. I coded satellite and ERA5 Reanalysis data with python to explore: the covariability between sea surface temperature and wind speed, and the source of mesoscale rectification in the large-scale latent heat flux. I performed a Taylor Expansion of latent heat flux around large scale sea surface temperature and wind speed to isolate the nonlinear contributions.Presenting: I presented the results of the study publicly in 15-minute presentations at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa's Physical Oceanography Symposium (2021), and SIO-UH Oahu Workshop on Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions and Climate Predictability. I presented a poster on the research at American Geophysical Union’s 2022 Ocean Sciences Meeting. presented and defended my master’s thesis in a 1-hr presentation in 2022.Fieldwork: I participated on 5-day Hawai’i Ocean Time Series (HOT) cruises. I took measurements of atmospheric and meteorological conditions. I assisted with deployment and recovery of oceanic instruments such as CTDs (conductivity, temperature, and depth monitors), niskin bottles, among others.

In the fall of 2021, I taught one semester of “ERTH/OCN 312: Advanced Mathematics for Scientists and Engineers." I hosted office hours 2-hours per week for tutoring individuals. I graded assignments and examinations. I taught three-dimensional calculus, vector calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, matrices, and more.In the spring 2022, I taught and one semester of "GES 310: Global Environmental Change." I assisted the professor with creating lectures on climate change and environmental issues. I led class discussions and I answered student’s questions during class. The course was also focused on writing, so I graded essays and assisted with writing tutoring. The course covered various topics, including climate change, agriculture, oceanography, the Earth's heat balance, feedback systems, ecology, earth science, and more.

Student Assistant to Katja Freidrich in the Atmospheric and Oceanic Science Department of CU Boulder. While studying as I full time student, I assisted Dr Freidrich with two research projects. (1) Hail Accumulation Project: Analyzed radar images of hail accumulation, and wrote a python program that extracts and sorts sounding data from the program SHARPpy.(2) Wind Project: coded fifteen years of wind speed and direction data into various graphs to draw conclusions about the local climate

I created an inclusive on-campus housing environment that promoted personal development, citizenship, involvement, and leadership. RAs serve as a resource for students in their community. I was trained in emotional interviewing and assisted with conflict mediation amongst residents. I served as a first responder in emergency situations. I worked at the front desk and did customer service and administrative duties. I trained other resident advisors.

I attended a REU (research experience for undergraduates) summer internship at LASP (the Laboratory of Atmospheric and Space Physics). During the internship, I learned the IDL coding language and used it to analyze solar spectral irradiance data from the Spectral Irradiance Monitor on the Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE) satellite. I coded programs that processed and corrected the SIM data with parameters of degradation and compared the results to the Naval Research Laboratory Solar Spectral Irradiance (NRLSSI) model. I presented the results at a poster session and twenty-minute presentation at the end of the internship.
