I am a geographer, conservationist, and cross-scale ecologist, interested in advancing our understanding of patterns of plant and animal life. In particular, I use information on geodiversity and microclimates, which relates to landforms, geology, soils, and hydrology, to tackle this in science (what is the relationship and why?), policy (e.g., how can this help implement nature recovery actions?), and practice (how can this improve conservation and habitat management on the ground?). I completed my NERC-funded PhD at the University of Nottingham in 2018, my thesis entitled: “Advancing biodiversity and species distribution modelling using geodiversity information”.In 2022, I was the lead academic author for the impactful British Ecological Society (BES) report on "Protected areas and nature recovery: Achieving the goal to protect 30% of UK land and seas for nature by 2030" (see https://www.britishecologicalsociety.org/policy/protected-areas/). My work on nature recovery and the 30x30 target continues.Alongside my lecturing role in the School of Life Sciences, Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), Cambridge, UK (started Sept 2022), I work with Operation Wallacea (since 2015), a conservation research organisation, as a senior scientist, with field experience in Madagascar, Romania, and Croatia. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), I chair the BES's Macroecology Special Interest Group committee (https://www.britishecologicalsociety.org/membership-community/special-interest-groups/macroecology/), I'm a member of the IUCN's World Commission on Protected Areas Geoheritage Specialist Group, and I am ARU's liaison to the Cambridge Conservation Forum.I am a co-investigator on a NERC-funded project investigating plague survival in soil, applied to Madagascar, including fieldwork and microclimate modelling. Within ARU, I lead two undergraduate modules and contribute to teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate. I am the Outreach lead (open days, school visits, etc) for Biology.Twitter: https://twitter.com/josephjbaileyResearch Gate: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Joseph_Bailey5Google Scholar: https://scholar.google.co.uk/citations?user=S5meNScAAAAJ&hl[Last updated: July 2023]
