Madagascar

A four week position as a research assistant working for Operation Wallacea which was split into two weeks terrestrial working and two weeks marine working.During my time at the terrestrial sites, duties included daily surveys in herpetofauna, birds, lemurs and spiders. Bird surveys involved assisting in the ringing and handling of birds in a study on dry forest avian lifespans. Lemur surveys were mainly focussed on assessing species abundance within the dry forest with some focus to species level habitat data such as tree height and tree circumference as we assisted dissertation students collect data for their relevant projects. Spider surveys involved active searching and capture of live individuals for further genetic and morphological analysis for improving knowledge on understudied species. Also played a role in the photography of new spider species and assisting with plantation of new mangrove plants in a key biodiversity area.All surveys involved walking long distances on transects in environmentally challenging conditions. On occasions three surveys were undertaken in a day, highlighting the importance of high levels of physical fitness and determination to contribute to scientific research. Living conditions included camping in the dry forest with limited provisions.The last two weeks involved attaining my SSI Open Water Diver qualification and completing an Indian Ocean reef ecology course at Nosy Be. Once all skill dives were complete for the certification scientific dives were completed. Examples include nudibranch and sea urchin surveys (measuring species diversity and richness), fish ID dives and contributing to the citizen science project coral watch. Additionally completed revision of practical scientific skills such as deploying benthic transects on a coral reef and underwater photography.

Llyn Brenig

Under the Bangor University work placement scheme, I secured a role at North Wales Wildlife Trust’s lookout at Llyn Brenig for the Llyn Brenig Osprey Project. Main duties included monitoring Osprey behavior, educating the public and protecting the ospreys from any disturbance.

Assisting the international student support team with planning and producing the itinerary for the welcome week, answering student enquiries, organizing and taking part in the pickup and transfer of around 200 international students from Manchester airport to Bangor.
