I am known for 'Red Arrows', a book about Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team and for three decades of commissioned editorial photography, personal reportage projects and book collaborations with authors.Following Red Arrows (2004) came two more books: 'The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work' (Hamish Hamilton, 2009) and 'A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary' (Profile Books, 2009) both with Alain de Botton. In 2015 my pictures helped tell nine narratives about risk-takers ('Risk Wise: Nine Everyday Adventures' by Polly Morland, Profile Books 2015).In the summer of 2022 my black and white documentary and landscape photography has appeared in 'A Fortunate Woman: A Country Doctor's Story', again with Polly Morland and shortlisted for the 2022 Baillie Gifford.Originally, after some years working in aviation, I studied Documentary Photography at Gwent College of Art under Magnum's David Hurn in the mid-eighties then freelanced for the Observer newspaper before being represented by the Katz/IPG agency. My work was subesequently published as photo-essays in the world's image-led news magazines and corporate literature.Nowadays I work independently, pursuing personal projects that may be topical or geographical, quirky and incongruous.As well as more recent digitally-created images, my extensive archive of scanned film images from the mid-80s to early 2000s are online here at Photoshelter, with Getty Images (via 'In Pictures') and Alamy. I am also a member of the iN-PUBLIC street photography project.
