Hemp Grower Hi I am Barbara Maher, or better known here on the farm by my granddaughter Penny (namesake of Penny’s Ice Cream Lancaster) as the “Mother of Hemp.” I have been blessed to own and be a steward of this beautiful 24 acre farm along with my husband of 39 yrs. Chris. We raised 4 wonderful children, Jeremy, Sarah (Caleb’s wife), Bethany and Leah on this farm for almost 25 yrs now. We also have 2 goats, Ivy and Buckley, our horse Shiloh, 2 dogs Clifford and Rushleigh to add to our farm adventures.My passion has always been to preserve our farm and grow plants to create a healthy lifestyle. Over the years I have grown all types of vegetables, berries and fruits and have a wide variety of flower gardens. I’ve been into alternative health for over 30 yrs learning to use herbs, plant oils, foods, and supplements to aid in keeping my family healthy. As I tilled and dug in this land I have always prayed God would bring a crop that would take my husband and I into our ‘golden years.” A few years ago, I became aware of Hemp and thought this could be the crop - prior to all the wonderful news about CBD benefits. I saw the possibilities of how the plant could not only help regenerate the soil, grow a crop of fiber to be used for textiles, replacement of plastics, building materials, biofuels and medicinal use in foods and health products. My own experience with Hemp started over a year ago, taking the CBD oil for a rotator cuff injury for the inflammation - it had remarkable effects for me. My family members have also used the salve for muscle and joint aches and the teas for better sleep. My journey this year has brought me into a whole new learning experience of understanding this incredible Hemp plant. The education of ‘on the job’ training to farm field workshops, webinars, podcasts and studying has been nothing short of overload in all honesty.. We started this Spring with the planting of seedlings and clones in our first greenhouse, planting a small plot in our meadow. By the time Fall came, we had what looked like small Christmas trees ready to harvest. We set up drying and are now in the process of cleaning and trimming the plant. Using organic methods to nurture and grow these plants on a daily basis, we are happy with the outcome. Both our plant varieties brought us some high quality CBD potency in our first growing season!
