 Procured over a million dollars in grants from the US Department of Education, National Endowment for the Humanities, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and other institutions. Outcome: Funding for graduate fellowships, research projects, international conferences, additional language courses, and a new interdisciplinary freshman course.  Created the initial design of the Center's new website https://www.international.ucla.edu/cnes/home. Outcome: Dissemination of material for educators, and unbiased public information about history, cultures, and modern life in the countries of the Middle East, North Africa and the Islamic world.

Critiqued and ranked 16 massive proposals to strengthen foreign language and international studies programs across the country.

Performed language needs analysis, with particular emphasis on Pacific island languages and native Latin American languages, for Kaiser's national program on Culturally Competent Care.

Conducted library and Web research, led content development team, maintained contact with related projects nationwide, wrote proposals, reports, journal articles. Directed production of a searchable online bibliography of over 9000 teaching materials for 150 languages, as the centerpiece of an easily navigable website.Outcome: About 10,000 people a month used the website, including teachers, government language specialists, and independent learners. Wrote competitive grant proposals to the National Endowment for the Humanities and the U.S. Department of Education, obtaining over a million dollars in federal support.Outcome: Secured funding to sustain the research center for 10 years. Oversaw the creation of over 100 project-based lessons for language training.Outcome: Teachers could download the lessons free of charge. This was a goldmine for those teaching less-common languages for which there weren't adequate textbooks available.

Directed world-wide team of freelance translators, surveying digital text resources in less common languages, creating protocols for testing translation-software. Located millions of words of digital texts in over 30 languages to train translation software developed by a startup company. Investigated the grammars of rare languages to produce digital lexicons for computer input.Outcomes: Within 5 years, the company became a leading producer of translation software, numbering hundreds of international corporations and government agencies among its customers. In its 8th year the company was acquired for $42.5 million. Wrote a light column about languages to brighten a monthly customer newsletter.Outcome: Corporation gained credibility as foreign language experts to a readership of about 3700 clients in corporations and government agencies.

Designed and initiated a project, funded by the National Science Foundation, to digitize rare fieldwork recordings of endangered languages and offer them online through the California Digital Library. Researched the standards for audio archiving and metadata; arranged collaboration between the UCLA Digital Library and Linguistics Department, to turn drawers full of rare tape recordings into an online public resource.Outcome: Scholars worldwide use the website to investigate and reconstruct endangered languages.

Offered survey courses on comparative and historical linguistics to over 250 non-linguistics majors.

Covered foreign-language journals to develop content for the quarterly international reference work Linguistics and Language Behavior, an international finding-aid for about 2000 journals, forming a hub for cross-disciplinary research in the fields of linguistics, psychology, neurology, communication, and special education.

Modernized corporate databases in preparation for the Y2K century date change. Evaluated hundreds of the Metropolitan Water District legacy databases. Devised a technique to import them into a modern database system with an improved interface.Outcome: 300,000 records of corporate information were recovered.
